Be really cool to see the survey take off and we use that as the basis for a full research questionnaire with data modeling. At least my 2 years of market research analyst won't have gone to waste.

Imagine if companies / shops could buy the dataset of 10,000s of skaters and use that to inform their manufacturing / purchasing decisions.

That sounds nice to the engineer in me but then I also really like the reckless shit show it is right now. That can help keep the madness at bay a bit too.  :)

True, when I was in the analyst role I had to give respondents an 80 question survey and have them respond to every question if not the results would be invalid. Can't imagine most skateboarders having enough patience to answer 20, most outside of Slap have zero idea about length and wheelbase.

I asked this in another thread but I wonder how come the popularity in 8.0 decks tanked so hard in the last 2 years. I know people had been steadily moving up in size with 8.25 being the standard and 8.125 being the bastard size no one wants. But stores are stacked to the rafters in 8.0 (FA, Tactics, Skatewarehouse) and they have been on clearance prices for months.

Among the locals at my park I count only 3-4 out of 20 riding 8.0 - usually shorter rider, female riders, or those stuck in the 2000s and can't be bothered to size up.

Asked myself the same thing. I came from 7.75 years ago and switched over to constantly riding 8.12 or 8.25. Literally noone I know skates an 8. It seems that 8.25 is the new 7.75/8. Curious to see what the preferred deck size will be in 5 years from now.

I also would have imagined there to still be more people riding 8 than 8.8 or 9+. But it might all come down to the dominating age group on slap (90+)

That's 1 more question to add to the questionnaire for 2023.
What deck size did you ride in each period 1990 / 2000 / 2010/ 2020.
What deck size do you think you will ride in the next 2 years.

This survey could be a gold mine of data that woodshops and brands would love to get their hands on, if the bigger brands don't already have a data analytics team crunching sales data for this.

Yup good point, this should be included in the survey. I bet that the bigger brands/distros would have such a "data analytics" team, should be pretty straightforward to analyze for them. Thus I am not sure how much of an gold mine our survey could be but if we manage to spread it out past Slap we would have the chance to get a good overview.
Also what @goodatmeth said. Age group probably influences the results here. Another reason could be that popular/cool brands of the last decade like Polar/FA mainly sell boards in the 8.25+ range and that kids simply buy into that. But that could also be a hen and egg issue.

I'm surprised more people don't skate twin tails. I was dying for someone to make those when I was younger... But I think I'm too set in my ways (and afraid of them going away) to get into them now.

Also loving blunted/full nose/tail and I'm not sure if anyone makes a twin tail that is also full like that.

Neen has a Deathwish double nose and it's fuller than the tail but I don't think it's quite like the AWS/Quasi/etc nose

I mean, I don't get why it gotta be "stuck in the 2000s and can't be bothered" as though everyone factually has to prefer the same size decks. Yeah, I'm an older guy who came up in the 90s', hell in the 90s' my preferred size was 7.5 so technically I have sized up.
I've tried 8.25 multiple times and I just don't like it, so what do I do? Just keep trying to fit a square peg into a round hole so I can fit in and ride the same setup as everyone else? Fuck all that, I ride what I like.

No shade to the guys riding 8.0s, you do you and deck size is more art than science.

But a lot of guys from the 8.0 camp I've met tell me they used to skate in the 2000s, since then they developed some height but mostly dad bods. A few of them try skating 8.0 for a start but size up by their next setup because they need more space on their boards and don't plan to go hard on flip tricks.

Sorry, I get a little heated on this topic sometimes because I've literally had strangers at the park comment on my decks and say stuff like "dude, looks like you're on a tech deck, how do you skate that thing?". Not necessarily in a mean way, but still, gets a little old sometimes.

Luckily I've managed to fight off dad bod, and I mostly skate flatground and ledges. I hear people praise bigger boards for having more space but I view them a different way...when it's time to bail on a trick I feel like it's harder to get a wider, heavier board away from you haha

Its definitely harder to skate big boards in a lot of ways, harder to skate thin boards in a lot of ways. I understand it all. Though I don't understand going below 7.75 unless you have small feet.

It feels like a balance between techery, and ride-ability. Once you get small enough it feels like you are on a balance beam rather than a transportation device. But once you get big enough it feels like you are trying to kickflip a boat rather than something that is meant to be flipped.

Its all valid. I like going fast, and I've given up on tech stuff, so I went up to a 8.5 with big wheels. Who knows maybe someday I will grab an 8.0 for flatground sessions, but for now I'm happy with a wider board.
Skateboarding is the ultimate challenge.
