What's everyone shooting on these days?
« on: December 30, 2022, 04:44:11 PM »
Haven't made a proper post in a while and I'm curious to gage what everyone is shooting on.

Has HD finally won? Or is SD still standing tall now?

Obviously not every filmer is on Slap (although they should be) so I'd love to know what the percentage is. Is it HD, SD or a bit of both?

Over the years we've all heard HD will win the so-called war, whilst VX users still hold onto that camera like it's their life support.

In the mean time check this son of a bitch that I got for a steal.

A HVX200 for scale.

2/3' sensor, shoots to DVCAM and is a fucking beast. Super wide angle lens as well, close to a fisheye. (The tissue is for the perished rubber that gets onto my hand. I'm sure there is a better way around it.)

Shooting HD on a Hpx 170 with a 72mm kapkur fisheye. Pretty standard setup I guess but I love it to death.
Also have a super-8 cam that doesn’t work atm haha

Not filming a ton these days but the main setup is a GH5 w/ 8-15mm and a Canon XA11 for long lens. Perfect for both 16:9 or 4:3 footage.

HPX170 with a Century MK1 on a homemade lens adaptor, cropped to 4:3. Good ol' 720p.

I also have a 72mm Opteka fisheye for the rare occasion I'm shooting 16:9 footage.

VX1000, my HPX has been collecting dust for a while now. I don't have as much time as I used to to film so I'd rather just film on the camera I like better.

Was up until my most recent full length vid; a VX1000 w/ a Century Optics MK1 recording on a HVR-MRC1 and a second VX1000 also accompanied with a MRC1 for long lens, B-roll etc.

Now into the 'modern' world with a Canon XF100 with the same lens as the above.

VX1000 and VX2000 with an opteka for SD.
For HD I bought an old Lumix GH4 with a Meike 3.5mm fisheye, but I still need something for long lens, any suggestions?

@suckmadeck I got a b4 2/3 lens (FUJINON A15x8BEVM-28B to be precise) working on my gh4 with a b4 to mft adapter, a powerbank and a 5.5/2.5mm 12v to 12 pin hirose adapter for long lens footy cause it is parfocal. For the rubber, I am pretty sure the softener is gone. I rubbed the rubber of from mine with tissues and isopropanol. It was a pain but worked. There have to be better ways/solvents but i didn't want to use a too aggressive one.
It is not to convenient to use freehand because there is no image stabilization neither from the lens nor from the gh4 and I don't own a shoulder mount. Would love to try it with a gh5 for that reason.
I like the image, but one does see though that the glass was not made for FullHD/4k.
Have not filmed too much with it.
Does your lense have a doubler?

-Panasonic HPX 250 for long-lens
-Panasonic Gh5 with Meike 3.5 for fisheye.
-Smallrig Case and weights to avoid shaky footage
-Rode videomicro with audio in manual and no limiter

Super happy with the setup, great for 4:3 and 16:9

I’d say get a fisheye and a cage with a top handle and you should be good. Also prob wanna get a some kind of microphone.

Depending on if you want to film 16:9 or crop to 4:3 would determine what kind of fisheye you should get.

For 16:9 I would get something like this meike 7.5 or a samyang/rokinon 8mm.
https://www.adorama.com/mk7528fx.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIh6ujn96I_QIV6vTICh2MoADoEAQYHiABEgL4yPD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds&utm_source=inc-google-shop-p

For 4:3 I would say get a meike/opteka 6.5 or a laowa 4mm.

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1542241-REG/venus_optics_ve428fx_laowa_4mm_f_2_8_fisheye.html/?ap=y&gbraid=0AAAAAD7yMh0WBvKRnLSSLdN3b4hG85HbR&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIh6ujn96I_QIV6vTICh2MoADoEAQYGSABEgLzFfD_BwE&lsft=BI%3A514&smp=y

As far as mics the rode videomicro should work pretty solid.

Good luck

New set up: canon xa11 + mk1 58mm screw fisheye + random mic. It’s a little front heavy currently so probably gonna try to rig up some kind of weight through the tripod mount off the back to counterbalance it.

Doesn't the mic show up in the top of the frame?

It just barely doesn’t. if it’s really windy sometimes a few of the fuzzies will barely peek into the top of the frame, but only happened once so far.

I use a canon 550d dslr with a vivitar 8mm fisheye, have an anal bead tripod and a plastic follow cam thing that the camera screws into - no external mic or other attachments. I use lightworks as free video editing software and has served my needs so far.

You have any test footage with the fisheye, just curious to see and hear what it looks and sounds like

I believe SD will never die, I film both in HD and VX and everybody I encounter is more motivated to film if a VX is around. From a filmer perspective tapeless solutions came in handy to make SD cams life longer although the price to pay is still a bit high and not always chosen due to how uncomfortable it could be.
With this said after I encountered an HD format that I love I can't stop believing the classic vx1000 + mk1 is still the best cam setup for filming skateboarding , purely because of the aesthetic.

I'm currently filming with:
HD
  • GH5 + meike 6.5mm 2.0f for fisheye with a rode videomicro mic
  • Panasonic hcx1500 for long lens standard mic

VX
vx2100 + modded mk2 , unfortunately the lens I put inbetween got a bit scratched and sometimes you notice it in the footy.

Also I wanted to ask; since I am using the GH5 on a VLog color profile, does anybody think that this color profile could be added in post to get close to the one the vx1000 has? so far I must say that the results coming out of color correcting a VLog are really good, it could come out amazing If color corrected just as a vx..
