Should the skate industry start drafting skaters like the NBA?
« on: January 05, 2023, 11:40:05 AM »
Was watching some bball last night and had this thought: what if skate companies had an annual draft pick after the tampa am or something and teams had to draft the up and comers.. would be kind of funny even though it obviously wouldn't work because people probably just want to skate with their homies more organically.

But Idk, maybe every team should just drop all their riders and all the teams have a big re-draft for just the year.

Semi-related: would be funny to have a fantasy league as well like how people do fantasy football and stuff. I've never actually done it so bear with me but everyone in your group picks a few skaters and you get points for tricks in their video parts and stuff, 1 pt per stair + trick multiplier or something and bonus points for skating a new spot so it's just about whose hucking the craziest.

This is an extremely dumb idea, as is anything that makes skating more similar to major sports.

i was just thinking about this last week

would obviously never work but it's fun to think about if you're a sports fan

- what would historical teams look like if you started the 'league' with a draft and each year the draft pick order is assigned based on performance of that team? would certain teams still end up being so stacked, what interesting groups of skaters would've come about, etc
- the gifted hater video was missing draft picks (although it would've made it way too nerdy for a general skate audience), since in the NBA at least, trades are rarely 1:1 or 2:1 player swaps, and draft picks are generally included

Impossible. Skateboarding is much more like European soccer with "youth systems/teams" being like flow/am. There is no high school/college skating so there is no pool to draft from.

Trades/transfers are a much more interesting discussion because it's something that could actually happen

Dont know much bout soccer, but i can see where your point. Unless skateboarding had standardized salaries for incoming rookie pros, a draft can never work. Surely DLX compensates their pros better than Dwindle. Imagine being drafted first by Enjoi only to be told that you might not get paid, then the 8th pick goes to Real and theyre set for the rest of their career.

Prob thinking too much into this

Imagine if Max Palmer got drafted to Birdhouse or Disorder or something though. Dude! I'd be so upset!

I can see the bird man or Jah going to New York and start moving his stuff, just forcibly moving him out west.

Imagine teams tanking for the number one draft pick. Pizza wouldn’t even have to try.

Powell would consistently trade down picks like the Pats.

Already happens. Every draftee has to play for the Woodward YT show during their first season.

this is sort of how Plan B got started; it’s right there in the name

free agency instead of drafts, but the sports mentality was there

Imagine if we took away the option for skaters to have any kind of agency in decided who/where they are employed!

I could see Reynolds being smart like that. He'd sit on all of Baker's footage, draft Fuka Nakashima first overall and then drop Baker 5 the following year. Like a boss.

The Boss is Brad Pitt in Moneyball and instead of OBP it’s how good are little dudes relative to their board/wheel size

Could definitely see Reynolds and Spanky rambling to the rest of the team about Kader's height to board size ratio in the Baker board room before drafting him. Maybe firing Braydon mid rant cause he doesn't get it.

Would obviously suck for the skater but it would be funny to see the revive crew doing some dorky glass skateboard challenge or something and Kevin Rodriguez is just chain smoking in the corner.

Probably ought to go one step further and require one year of college for eligibility.

But honestly just an all around bad idea.

Get hungry on it!

Blind basically does that. They tank as the shittiest brand and somehow draft the wildest Japanese skaters in their rookie years like Yuto and Sora
