Australian music thread

Anyone down? I don't really know what's good in Australia right now so post some current stuff if you want.

Been on a Dick Diver binge again recently, haven't really felt like listening to anything else lately.

Frenzal Rhomb has a new one coming as does the Go Set. Throw in the recent album by The Disables and you’re all sorted

Stuff I didn't post in other thread:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihQgCtwQmuI
Maybe my fav grind album of all time?

People will talk about frenzal rhomb or body jar when they mention Aussie pop punk, but they are ignoring the all mighty lawnsmell. Not much out there in the YouTube universe, but track some of their stuff down:
https://www.discogs.com/artist/371850-Lawnsmell

Also:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Q8Ag99W_WQ&t=198s
never got enough love overseas ...

Hardcore is a whole other thread in itself, but Subversion are one of the better representations of the genre imho:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zen-_AOpInY

what about something completely different?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRMVfqqw-xw
really great live band!

also criminally underrated instrumental band:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bSkwVkx4Wrk
(features member of agents of abhorrence too)

very underground emo band:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRUlPR2TpWw
they would blow your mind if you saw them live though!

hard call, but for the most part grunge/ alternative with some pop punk adjacent tunes. I still think lawnsmell take the cake, but it's hard to find their stuff online, so most people don't know them, unless they were attending shows back in the day.
Do you know about one inch punch (who later became mid youth crisis)?

Big Go-Betweens fan here. I especially love the first two albums, Send Me a Lullaby [1982] (which isn't as well-regarded for some reason) and Before Hollywood [1983]. Although "Bachelor Kisses" is probably my favorite song of theirs and not off either of those albums.

I have a lot of Oz favorites, The Birthday Party, The Saints, The Church, Pel Mel, The Reels, hell... even INXS. However, I'm especially fond of the more experimental/esoteric Synth/Wave-adjacent stuff like Severed Heads, Artificial Organs, Asphixiation, Essendon Airport, David Chesworth, Primitive Calculators, Whirlywirld, Ash Wednesday, The Metronomes, The Fabulous Marquises, Voigt 465, Wild West, the M Squared bands (Scattered Order, Systematics, Ya Ya Choral, Denial, Aural Indifference, Height/Dismay, Tame O'Mearas, Makers of the Dead Travel Fast, etc.), but my favorite Australian band/record/song is this one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8qzV0SogxA

I've also been playing this one out a lot lately; it's off the soundtrack to the essential Australian cult classic Dogs In Space:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=es6sSlLSoII

As for more modern/contemporary stuff, I love Total Control and Exek. Definitely check them out:

Icehouse
Had a friend bust out their Primitive Man LP a few years ago, but I’ve never explored them, just seen their records many times in my 25 years of going record shopping, working in record stores, etc.

I would always picture blown dry mullets a la solo Robert Plant, Lou Graham, etc. but definitely appreciate well-produced/written mersh 80’s New Wave Pop though.

Fully remember “Electric Blue” from my days of being raised on peak MTV.

Man Lindy Morrison was my tafe teacher for a semester but it was before I was even knew who the gb's were really. Wouldve rinsed her for so much info lol

You guys may recognise Alex Cameron from a few skate clips. One of Australia's greatest of all time imo but unfortunately never seen an artist suffer from second album syndrome so hard. Still a couple good songs past Jumping The Shark though

I kinda don't fuck with amyl and the sniffers tbh. Musically i find them pretty boring compared to a lot of other aussie punk bands who did similar things but better and i also think the ironic bogan thing is pretty played out at this point

Yeah that's fair. I enjoy when I hear them, and I'm super into that sound suddenly... although I lived in Aus for 20 years and just moved back to NZ so maybe I'm missing that sound?

Couple less known things I was listening to today, after thinking about Aussie music all afternoon.

Deaf Wish (used to see these guys a bunch when they were playing pub gigs around Melb. I swear I went to their last-ever show about a dozen times)

https://deafwishstyle.bandcamp.com/track/freeze-the-sound

Miss these guys a lot:

Always found it weird how big Royal Headache got randomly, out of a bunch of other bands of that era. But they are still great:

I've been hyped on this, but it's already a decade old. Their most recent lineup includes the EXEK guitarist. Sorta like a less harsh and psychopathic/misogynist, but equally misanthropic Aussie answer to Swedish lo-fi noise-punk legends Brainbombs mixed with a touch of The Fall. This song is the mellowest on the album, but fascinating; it's about staying home while your mom's gone out, getting really high on skag, and having masturbatory fantasies about Rihanna:

Low life are sick. Definitely one of the best bands of the past decade. I saw them shortly after they released this album when they were supporting Iceage. Their other albums are great too.

Singer is a bit of a kook though but makes good music
