South East Asia spots
« on: March 26, 2024, 08:31:41 AM »
Hey everyone,

I'm looking to do a big trip at the end of the year for about 3 months, starting in Hanoi (Vietnam) and looking to end in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia). I am taking my boards with me and gonna be looking to do lots of skating. Does anyone have any recomendations for spots? Hanoi I have covered as I've been recently but going south I have no clue. If people could drop their gems that would be amazing.

Thanks in advance gang

Hey, I'm from SEA but haven't done street skating in Malaysia, but Mount Kiara skate park in KL is really popular. Probably a good place to start getting some intel from locals.

What countries in particular are you hitting up? I know a bit about Indonesia in particular but it's probably better to hit the local shops and ask them.

They’ll possibly invite you on the session.

Ampang Park in KL is just over the metro station, definitely worth checking out.

I'm definitely doing Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam by land, looking to also try visit Phillipines if the budget and time allows! Went to Indonesia last year but stupidly didn't take my board

It was 12 years ago and i only had a chance to skate w some lil street kids on their skatopia set up, but Phnom Penh looked like there were some ill spots.

Theres an old slap mag article about a burning Wat and Freddy Gall pulling a monk out of a fire on Cambodia.

Well-defined ambiguity, I'm already on somebody's list as a casualty

Couple of parks in Malaysia
Penang Gunery Bay - brand new, might still be under construction, SLS style
Putrajaya Challenge - big concrete park, limited street obstacles
Ampang - newest, plaza style

In Thailand
Preduce - pretty far out of Bangkok but worth the visit for the shop too
RK69 - DIY spot

https://www.youtube.com/@Theskatenomad - this guy has been traveling around SEA recently has documented a few parks, would be a good reference point to parks to hit. You know the rules for street spots - get the deets from locals.

I did almost 3 months in just Vietnam in 2017 and felt like I barely even started to really tap in. I would suggest slowing down, maybe less countries? When you go super fast you only get surface level experiences, and you miss those deeper connections. As far as skating, spots are always better in bigger cities, and if you want to meet other skaters it’s best there too. But also don’t listen to me all haha you’ll have fun however you do it

Lenin Park in Hanoi is where all the skaters(and BreakDancers) meet up.

Vietnam is super rad, I've been twice and each time had a great time. Hanoi is a really cool city. Malaysia has cool skateparks, also the space museum in KL has the sundial half pipe that everyone skates.
