It’s way too much. I feel so much better now with one setup. After trying almost everything I’ve found my “good enough” setup.

There are people like Chico who can skate as well on a brand new complete as anyone could skate on their regular deck, but those people are few and far between and I think it's plainly obvious that most of us are better skaters the more time we spend skating a single complete.
This is not my SOTY. I'm telling my kids there was no SOTY for 2021

When I was younger, I couldn't really afford to get a lot of gear. As I got older I would keep my one setup and a backup deck. Skate shoes and everything else I would just buy as needed. I was always very careful with my stuff because I wanted it to last.

Now years later and having the financial means, I can spoil myself. When the pandemic was going on I started to hoard gear. A stash. I still have a stack of boards and several pairs of shoes. A box with wheels and more trucks. I really enjoy trying out different trucks. I'm stocked up and realistically I don't need to buy anything this year. I know I am going to use them all eventually, so I don't feel bad about it, but it does seem easier to not have so much stuff.

Agreed. It’s wild, changing setups often kinda messed with my running starts. I’m extremely sensitive to weight apparently. My timing was all off. Gonna stick to this current configurations for at least a year.

How long can you realistically have a board on ice before it starts to get soggy?
You’re a Florida native, aren’t you?

I’ve seen folks on here say they’ve taken five year old wall hangers and skated them fine. In my mind, they shouldn’t go bad if they’re stored in a climate controlled place, but I could be wrong.

It depends on how you store them and the humidity level of where you store them. I’ve skated 3-5 year old BBS boards and they didn’t feel different than the ones before/after the old one. They were just stored in shrinkwrap, in a box that I got from a shop, in a closet, with steeper ones on top…55 humidity, 68-72 degrees, and no sunlight. Most of what I get as wall hangers end up getting skated within a couple years.

If you can’t maintain humidity/temperature levels, you probably have to go through more hoops to keep them from getting warped or soggy.

wait, you guys don't just keep your boards in your climate-controlled wine cellars? A vintage chino next paired with a vintage pinot?

I guess every pro surfer has a photo with their quiver. I get why it wouldn’t be a thing for skating where the “wave” isn’t changing enough to warrant changing boards, maybe wheels.

.

I used to live by the theory that if I find something I like, chances are I might not get it again, so once I am set on whatever it is, I buy all of them I can find and fund within reason.

To be fair, it didn't help that I had wholesale access to distributors for a while when working as the skate shop guy, but well over half of what I have was still bought directly from other shops when I was on the road for a long time in another role.

This has been good for some things, like Classic Full wheels, but sometimes not so good for other things, where I change up a board size, or similar.

At least nothing goes to waste, so it is all recycled if not used - given to others or sold / traded with people I know, but nowdays I am trying to only skate things I know I can get more of, or that are very standard lines, rather than getting that one board shape that might not be around long, or wheel shape, or shoe or whatever.

I could probably do well over twenty complete board setups, as well as complete clothing outfits from head to toe and more all with identical things, even down to the same colours, or at the very least, the same basic things, so for that I am happy and never need to change.

It is totally too much, but that is where I am and I don't really buy anything for myself any more either, so I can work through what I have got.

I talk too much about skateboards.  Sorry.

Yeah, I’m going with gear that’s readily available. That’s why I decided to just ride FA/Hockey Shape #1 decks cause they’re easy to find since they only have two shapes. I like Real, but they have 8.5s with multiple wheelbases and the shapes aren’t labeled as far as I can tell.

I had a zero deck someone flowed me in 97 on my garage wall until 2015 then pulled it down and skated it. Was perfectly fine(no idea who the wood shop would’ve been at that time) no warps/sogginess /brittleness. This was in a garage that would get to freezing temperatures occasionally, damp winters since it was Yuba City, and constant triple digit summers. Granted I wasn’t jumping down huge stuff at that time.

That’s great to hear. Since it’s just wood, seems like they’d be fine for the most part. Makes me happy cause I already know it’ll take me a few years to skate all my extra decks 😅

Meh I think I used to go pretty ham on having backups but nowadays I tend to just buy one when I think my board is getting close to done (I razor tail the shit outta my boards. Still trying to fix my pop properly its gotten better). Every once in a while something will catch my eye that I really want to try and I'll put it as my "backup when current X piece of equipment is done"
"dude was that switch?"

At first I thought "that's excessive."   Then I realized that the big difference between you and I is that you have the self control not to put them together.

If I have a board, trucks wheels and bearings, I will put them together.    Last night I ended up with all my boards in one place and realized I have 11 setups varying from 8.0" to 10".

Yeah, this.

I have a lot of shit. It’s kinda more of a deal where I live in a small town and not a lot of people skate/I’m waaaaay older than the people that skate, so I have a lot of old gear that could maybe get passed on, maybe is just old.
I was about to press buy on an order, and realized I could just regrip a board and be fine. I don’t get much time to skate anyway.
Because o rush to set everything up, it’s less exciting to circle back to something I’ve skated a handful of times, 2-3 years ago. I realized the last boards I bought are over a year old. Ha

Oh shit. That crossed my mind the other day. 48 in a couple of months... time to ease up on the hoarding. I have five decks in the stack. four sets of wheels....not to mention the four set ups I have right now.

If I have a heart attack I'll ask my wife to send all my unused Huffers to the Huffer cult.

If it affect your life or mental health in a negative way it’s too much gear. If it makes you happy the more the merrier.

As others have mentioned, what cured me from having too much gear was getting hurt....multiple times. When your out for 6+ months and sitting on gear its a horrible feeling, not to mention when you finally get back to skating you may now have a difference preference on what gear you want to skate. Now I limit myself to only having 2 extra decks and 2 extra pair of shoes. Reason for this is because decks and shoes wear down the fastest for me. I get to enjoy splurging on "sales" but never go off the deep end. Having too much stuff mentally f*cks me
