Mustaches
« on: March 17, 2023, 01:01:10 PM »
Anyone here have a mustache? I've been watching a lot of 80's movies and shows... mustaches everywhere. My wife's dad (or i could say father in law).. has a mustache and has looked like Magnum PI forever. I'm pondering growing one because my son said they're pretty sick. I never do facial hair ... i generally keep a 5 o clock shadow and that is it. My hair and/or facial hair is light brown, which I dunno if i'm feeling that in a stache so much but maybe we'll see. How is having a mustache? Is it a vibe? It seems like it would be a vibe indeed.

When I was in the air force I had one very briefly. If you don't know about military grooming regulations, they're strict as fuck (look up AFI 36-2903 if you want to see them) including the only facial hair allowed without a waiver being a mustache that doesn't extend past the ends of your mouth.

Over xmas/new years we would stagger our staffing so everyone got one of those two weeks off and most of the young single guys like myself took new years so the people with families could have Xmas. One year someone came up with the bright idea to have a mustache growing contest over the week we were all off. Now I'm a hairy motherfucker and I knew I could grow at least a recognizable lip sweater in a week so I was totally down. We all talked shit about how we were going to win and left for the holiday.

I come in the next Monday and I was the only fucking person with a mustache. No one else, including the dude who came up with the idea actually participated. I had to walk around all day catching child molester jokes from every angle. I wanted to keep it for a few days out of spite but my supervisor paid me $20 to shave it off that night.

Edit - if we're counting with beard I've been rocking that on and off for about 20 years

Started growing one around the beginning of December. Initially, I was going to go full beard/mustache combo, but my partner asked what I'd look like with just a mustache so I shaved the beard and never looked back.
It definitely makes me feel like I'm treated with more respect, but that's probably because it makes me look closer to my actual age than without it. (I'm 28, btw, most people think I'm fresh 18 when I have a shaved face)

It's not for everyone, but if you can get yourself to just do simple maintenance (trimming) then go for it.

Same here, but it’s been 2 years now. I’m about to shave it off when it gets a bit warmer here, kinda cool to see my face again(hopefully). When I still had hair I rocked all kinds of moustaches, from Lemmy style to thin pimp but with shaved head they look a bit too sus so all or nothing these days.

My go to clipper shave is a #2 on the stache and #1 on the rest.  So the stache looks pronounced for the first week or so, then gradually morphs into a normal beard.  Keep the neck clean and repeat every couple weeks.

I had a decent one develop during covid. I really should bring it back. I just hate the awkward phase.

I grew one over the first year of Covid, did the whole circus conductor / Richie jackson curls.

I’ve kept it but it’s a lot more maintained now, I’ve got a real red facial hair but darker hair so it’s a weird dynamic to go the full beard.

A Mo with a bit of scruff seems to be the right balance.

Been running one of various lengths for awhile now. I used to just trim the rest of my face with a 3mm and the mustache area with something longer. Now I’ve let it get even thicker and use scissors to clean it up. Usually just trim the rest once a week so it goes from obvious to slightly more subtle.

This is the way.

I rock a full beard for my wife's sake and the stache for my own, so it's the full beard much more often. Happy wife etc., y'all know the drill.

Had a mustache for about five years. All my groomsmen then grew one for our wedding. Shortly after I shaved as one day I saw this man with a mustache & for some reason it freaked me out so I went home & instantly shaved. I think they are cool but when I grow one I feel like I am intentionally trying to look hip so I stay away from it. Once in a while I will get some light scruff but I certainly prefer a baby face these days.

I've had a stache for 20 years, and occasionally I want to look a little younger so I'll shave it off… but it's just too startling now to see myself clean shaven. Never again.

I’ve had one on and off since 2004 I think. I generally keep it for a couple years and then shave it for a few months before regrowing it.

No one in my family, including my mom, has ever seen my dad without a mustache. There are some Vietnam era military photos of him clean shaven but that’s as close as we’ll ever get. I pretty much look exactly like my dad when he was my age, with or without the mustache.

My mustache kinda sucks but my wife likes it so I keep it most of the time. My dad’s mustache wasn’t that great when he was my age but now it’s fine, so there’s hope for me.

I won a local mustache competition 5 or 6 years ago.   I wanted a mustache long enough to wax like Rollie Fingers.  I got that, and then it kept getting bigger.  Then it got out of hand and the joke went to far.  I decided I was done with it and just about then the competition was announced.  I grew it for three more months and waxed it almost straight up like Dali.  The tips were eyebrow tall.  Won that shit, and shaved it off in the morning.  I'll never let it get that long again. It was a pain in the ass.  I would sleep on it and it would get all crooked and shit, so I couldn't even go to the store to get milk without grooming it.

I've had a mustache for all but maybe four weeks total since 1997.   Some friends and I were having a dumb facial hair contest, and a girl that I was into really liked it.  We dated for a few months until she moved out of state, and I hung onto the crush an the facial hair.

I switched it up a few times, and met my wife in 2003.  She has only seen me a few times without a mustache or beard (a few times in winter mode).  My kids have seen me even fewer times. Last time I shaved it (probably 5 years ago) my older daughter cried.

I restarted the process this past week since we have spring break. One thing I do like about not having a mustache is NOT needing a ton of napkins

Began with a bet with my roommate about 05 or so to see who could rock the best scumstache and eventually grew into it. Not on purpose but at one point, rocked a handlebar, had long hair to my tramp stamp area, got tired of strangers making fun of me in public by saying I look like Richie Jackson, then eventually trimmed everything accordingly.

Only time I cut it off completely was when I was on the last couple months of a 7 year felony probation. One drunk rainy afternoon I skated across the street and wanted to stop and hit the light to cross the street to my bottle shop. Wet ground made me slip out and my board shot into the street and tagged a white scion. Board was still hanging out of her car when she got out and asked for my drivers license as I was tugging it out.

Didnt have a license, just an ID then she got mad cuz she couldn’t comprehend how a grown person could not have a drivers license. She gave my ID back and said to wait and she was gonna call the cops. The moment my ID was handed back to me I threw my board down and went back home.

Freaking out because I work at your friendly neighborhood grocery store nearby and was thinking I was gonna run into her again I shaved it off for a few weeks. Except that one time, I’ve been rockin one for almost 20 years.

I started one last spring. I didn’t shave for a couple of weeks and jokingly shaved everything off except the stache. My wife didn’t hate it and my daughter seemed to love it so I kept goin with it. About 10 months in now and I trim it once a week or so. It took me about three months to really form a full thick blanket. Really like it and people kinda do treat you differently. It’s a vibe and I think every man should have a go at some point in their lives. I enjoy making fun of my fully bearded friends who are too poosey to let the mustache stand on its own.
My mother in law said I look like an 80s porn star I asked her what she’s doing watching 80s porn.

Shortly after my son was born I grew a dad beard.
Whenever I’ve shaved it off I immediately grow it back because it’s just weird to see my baby face anymore.
One year at Halloween I decided to do a test and go mustache only and play it off as a costume if I got clowned.
At that time the mustache was nice and thick, just scissor trimmed along the bottom edge.
All night long my wife and her best friend couldn’t look at me without laughing and calling me Lt. Dangle or pornstar.
Feedback was that it was just too bushy/full.
Now I just run a short tapered beard with the mustache being the longest.
I dunno if I’ll go back to mustache country again, but as a bald guy, it’s the only I hair have to change up so who knows.

I’ll grow and shave everything off. With a mustache for a couple of weeks. I’ll run it until it gets too much with food.
