Pickup Trucks
« on: March 24, 2023, 09:26:16 AM »
Any users / enjoyers of pickup trucks here? What have you owned, what are your favorites?  Likes, dislikes.

I’ve had:

- 99 ford ranger 4 cylinder with a manual transmission that I loved

- 2011 Ram 1500 v8 basic old man farmer truck

-2019 Silverado 5.3l which purrs like a little cougar kitten

I have no specific brand loyalty or anything.  Just a regular truck guy tryin to talk a lil trucks with like minds.

Love trucks! Once you get a taste , you will be driving them for life.

- My first car 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 single cab 3.7L V6
- 2014 Ram 1500 single cab 5.7L V8 , current ride
- 1986 Toyota Pickup. I acquired this truck for $100 for helping a lady move. Sold to my Uncle , I plan on buying this truck back one day.

The new Rangers, Canyons, & Colorados pretty disgusting. Like the older models though.  One of my dream trucks is 2000-2006 Toyota Tundra. Another dream truck is a diesel

this sounds majestic. My uncle has a 93 ranger, manual, 4 cylinder with 320,000 miles that he drives everyday!

had an '03 ranger. Red fx level 2, v6 with an lsd. Loved that truck but the bed was rusting through, the engine started knocking.

On the last day of their FY  in 2019 ford gave me $4k for it on trade in for a 2019 ranger. It was about 30k all in for an FX4 in kind of a douchey blue. Just paid it off a few months ago.

It is far and away a better vehicle, but I still miss the charm and 'truckness' of that old ranger.

I agree, the smaller trucks, save for the Tacoma, are a little off.  Not boxy enough or something.  Definitely don’t like how the bed rises up like a bitch in heat on the Colorados.

That being said, I could see myself driving the new rangers and being happy in it… but I still like the older look better.

@rawr1922, is your shit a hemi?

I never drive and dont have my license even though I turn 30 this year. When I initially learned though it was a Chevy S10 manual (probably mid to late 90s). If I was gunna get anything it would be a old chevy or ford.

I had a 2004 nissan frontier and it was great. It's nice not having people ask me to help them move these days.

Buy that Toyota back, @rawr1922 !

I went from a 2005 Tacoma 4dr PreRunner to a 1995 T100 4x4 8-9 years ago and am so pleased. If it was a 5speed it would be my dream truck.
I wish it was efficient enough to commute in, but it’s also nice putting minimal miles on it nowadays.

I've had:
2001 Ranger
2015 Ram 1500
2016 Tundra (until a few months ago). Tundra was awesome

Cost of living sucks balls right now so I sold my Tundra and me and my wife just share a car (she works from home so yep)

Prior to this i had
78 Bronco
89 Bronco II

I also used to drive my dad's 2001 Sierra when he was alive (and his previous Subrubans)

78 bronco was a boat huh?

My friend had like a 91 bronco and we used to drive over sidewalks in it.

learned to drive on a mid 90s F150 stick shift, set up to drive anything.

up to 00s the ranger was a nice truck too. my dad had an 07 4x4 ranger for a DD til the bed rotted off a few months ago. that was a sweet little v6 automatic truck that i really enjoyed driving while visiting.

pre-tacoma toyota pickups and gen 1 tacomas are awesome trucks. those gen 1s just go and go and go.

drove an earlier Tundra and a T100 for a work for a while and didn't really dig em all that much compared to the Ranger and Tacoma.

now i drive an 85 VW vanagon 4spd stick from which I removed power steering. more bad gas mileage and ya... i fill it up with shit like a truck and have fun

At my old job I’d drive a newer Ram 2500, thing could fly, super comfy, just a bitch to park.  Current job has an old Ranger which definitely has that truck charm, but kinda feels like riding around in a sardine can.  I love the look of short bed single cabs but I couldn’t justify getting one as a daily.

2021 tundra here. absolutely love it, and will be driving it for the next 10 years at least.

Had a beater 2006 dodge ram hemi to pull the boat, but it was rusty and my wife hated it in the driveway. I won!

I drove my neighbors 19 ford f-150, and it was smooth as silk, but kne(o)w it would be in the shop way before and less often than a tundra.

I know a lot of people with Tacomas that have put like 400k+ miles on them… my uncle had one with like 600k… I’d imagine the Tundras are comparable.  I’ve personally just never like how Tundras look.

Most f-150s I’ve been in have felt rather cheaply made.

I had a 94 Ranger back in the day. I loved that thing. I drove it until it fell apart. One day I will buy another. The old pickups were great. Not the new bulbous things. They're nice to drive, feels like a spaceship, but they're so gross.

Had a 2015 Tacoma and now a 21 GMC Sierra.
Loved the Tacoma because I knew I could put 200+k on it no worries. It drove stiff and the engine compartment sits too high ( or the seats are too low) .  Weird blind spot and AC issues too.
The Sierra is a beast. Smooth, plush and straight up V8. Massive tow package and bells and whistles everywhere. I could live inside -it’s so roomy. Probably will never go back to a mid size or smaller pickup.

Most f-150s I’ve been in have felt rather cheaply made.

The 5.7l V8 engine is bulletproof. I could take it up to 500k easily with proper maintenance. The new 2022+ switched to a V6 twin turbo, feedback is TBD.

The main thing i liked about the ford was a 10 speed transmission, versus my 6 speed (archaic) transmission.

Trucks are cool but I’ve noticed they’ve just become a the default NPC vehicle that people daily drive, rather than used for hauling/work. For the bulk of people I know or observe they seem so overkill.

That being said I had some Chevy Silverado as a rental one time since no other cars were available and it was a nice cruise. So maybe I get it.

Also what’s the deal with those single cab short bed trucks? They can only sit two and have a small bed. Do the fill some sort of niche?

Sure.  People use them for work, going to the dump, going fishing, a million things.  I guess it’s just a price thing?  I had standard cab ranger with a little bed that I did everything in.  [Dramatically removes glasses] Everything.

It’s necessary (ish)  -have to tow trailers.
I also got lucky and got an incredible trade in while the used car values were through the roof.  I only came out of pocket about 3k on the Tacoma after using it 5 years. The trade in was ridiculous.

I parked next to a giant pick up truck, had the extra wheels in the back, also had sliver balls hanging off the back. Watched the owner walk up, he was probably 5'4 and dressed exactly like a douche you'd expect to be driving a giant truck with balls haha

Wish you guys would post photos of your old trucks. I learnt to drive stick in an old buddies farm truck. Think late 80's or early 90's F-150.

In Australia/NZ a 'ute' is pretty much anything with a bed/tray in the back so a pickup truck falls under this term. But what I'm pretty sure he is referring to is like an El Camino, something halfway between a sedan and a pickup. Australia was actually producing these up until the last decade under Holden (GMC) and Ford and they were and are still very popular in rural areas.

Sorry I was trying to make a dumb joke about an old movie but thank you for the info which I did not know.
