Unless the shoe's performance works for someone, I do not get the appeal for throwback nostalgia shoes. If anything it makes me depressed looking at remnants of the past. Gotta be something psychological about looking downwards at something from a bygone era.
Not to be a broken record about them in here, but I genuinely enjoy skating the OG-1, Accel OG, etc. from yesteryear. Performance-wise, they all scratch that itch in shoes I've been looking for in the last ~20 years of skating. They're not narrow, dainty vulcs/cups that we've continuously had for the last 15 years, so that's why I pick them. They feel great on my foot and skate excellent. It's a bonus to look down and be hyped skating something I didn't get to when I was a kid. HOW they fit & skate is why I still largely choose these shoes over comparable NB#/Nike for example.
I completely get why it could bum/depress someone else out wearing/skating something from a bygone era, though. I've tried modern shoes from bigger brand and either the quality is meh or they didn't fit/mesh with how I skate most of the time. The 808, 1010, Japan Pro, 480, etc. are all modern/retro updates that are excellent examples of what Soletech brands *could* be doing with blending nostalgia & something new.
Tried Grasshoppers or crickets yet?
I've had a pair of Grasshoppers! Didn't skate them though. The pair I had was 0.5 small since I ordered online and couldn't try them in person to know what my IPath sizing would be.
Crickets & Grasshoppers are on my horizon to skate! I did enjoy the overall feel of my Grasshoppers before I sold them, minus their stock shitty insole (what brand doesn't have shitty insoles nowadays) of course
With each season of models, the quality seems to be getting better and better! From colorways to visible build quality!
Awesome, yeah, they are solid skate shoes and they seem to be exactly what you’re looking for.
I didn’t even know I missed this kind of shoe until I started skated grasshoppers, and legit have not skated this well in a very long time. Everything just works really well. My theory is that there’s the wide sidewall like a Vans might have so there’s a lot to grip the board… but then also has the cup sole rigidity.
Also the mid top might help a lot with being aware of what my foot is doing since it’s touching the ankle.
(I bought the OG-1 back on SSD with the red and white and liked the big and wide fit, but was turned off because there was no midsole at all (to the opposite of the advertising. Maybe they actually have a midsole now)
The accells (especially the OG OG Original “new” “old” whatever is what they just released) looks like they would skate well
