hope he'll be fine. but sadly from my experience it will be a while before we'll see him again.

friend of mine served atleast 2 years. he also had to devorce his wife to keep her out of trouble with her job and all. but they still together, just not on paper.

it's crazy cause theres so many people that smoke weed in Japan. even ones you really won't expect. i'm from the Netherlands and thats allways like the magical word for them to open up about it. usually super random.
now it might also got to do with what kind of people i attract in the first place.

I remember when I lived in Germany I thought it was so fucked how illegal weed was even over there. Every day going onto the train I saw police searching people. That would just never happen here, you have way too many rights and shit. But no joke every day they were catching people. They never once searched me cause I didn't know how to get weed there for most of the time i lived there. the one day i did have some i was so paranoid.

there was a kid i eventually met who skated who could get weed. he got caught once and he had to go to the police station and do drug test at 16 years old. he was still smoking, i was like "arent you worried about failing the test?" lol. hes like "ahh i just stop like a day or two before and im usually good"

this sounds like bavaria/broader south germany. they only do this shit there in my experience. or bored cops in rural areas. most people don't give a shit overall, police rarely does anything about it in cities. people grow weed on their balconies and at least in the cities, everyone seems to smoke. and it's going to be legal next year hopefully. maybe only half-legal, but growing and smoking will be allowed for sure.

japans drug laws are fucked, but i've heard that the youth is more lenient towards it, so maybe the change in attitude can bring a change in legislature with time. also, i have a feeling that weed references in japanese videogames have increased. of course, no one in their right mind would ever confess to smoking or having weed. i saw some funny vid a while back and some dude asked japanese people and often their reaction was along the lines of "whoah, weed is interesting haha, i would never do it haha." anyways...

free daisuke, shit sucks. burning some green rn as a tribute.

I have travelled Germany since the mid nineties and this is not my experience at all. But I have mainly gone to Hamburg or Berlin like once a year since back then. There has always been weed everywhere and people have been smoking it in public with out any problems. It is easy to access and I have bought it off strangers on the streets as well when I was younger. Of course it has been illegal, but never a big deal. Now they are legalizing it btw.

But Japan needs to chill - sad that Daisuke haves to go through this.

Can anyone with some knowledge on the subject explain why the weed penalties are so strict in these countries?

Japan and a lot of other Asian countries in general, have always had a very strict drug policy. It's just something they have always dealt with and will continue to deal with. It's also very hard to sell your political campaign if you are going to be the one who wants to make weed legal when the elderly population in Japan is still the voting majority. It's the same reason why Japanese porn still has to be blurred and why there will be no signs of that changing soon.

I didn't realize their laws were THAT draconian for weed. Now I understand why hentai tentacle porn exists. Only a chronically sober person could fathom the intersection of seafood and sex acts and create an industry out of it.

South Korea and Thailand have taken a softer stance towards weed, weed is legal in Thailand, medical marijuana is legal in South Korea.

to maximise trade/exploitation those bad teethed Brits decided to get all of Asia hooked on smack (opium) in the 1800's
this led to the First "opium war" ... and thus Asia's harsh stance on Drugs.

I have had a few friends go to the slammer for weed over here
My friend Uchi Eiji (he was J-SOTY many moons ago) did a year and a bit for a tiny amount

this is a story picking on a government anti-weed comic (its such a ridiculous comic)... the piece itself is a good read. and explains how Japanese people/society see drug use

Was the suspsected amount of weed ever disclosed?
So you can have police knocking on your door if they suspect you of having a nugget of weed?
I am not a smoker, but man that's kind of Stasi-like.

They “suspected” there may be drugs in his place because they noticed he had ordered a “drugs” plate from an American manufacturing concern called Fucking Awesome.

Japan is still a great place to go to as a traveler (biased because I am Japanese), but if you want to just freely skate or smoke weed, Europe is probably a much better place to go for vacation

Compared to america, the culture in many asian countries is still very traditional/conservative.

This usually leads to more strict drug policies.

We aren't big on civil liberties here, years of anti-drug propaganda helps fuel strong anti-drug sentiments among boomers.

Yeah Hamburg and Berlin are completely different than where I was living. There were a lot more junkies there doing hard shit - Weed was not really even on the radar for cops.

Frank nailed it dead on - I was living in a small town near Wurzburg in Bayern. That was the train station where the cops always were. I remember I was talking to someone on SLAP I believe it was Matze and he was telling me that where I was living is one of the strictest areas. I still managed to get some weed for the last few months of my stay though :)

Devils advocate: if you smoke weed in Japan, you know the stigma/ risks associated with it, especially if you are a local!
Have I smoked here (when I was young and dumb)? Hell yes! Is it worth the risk, hell no!

It’s amazing to me how many skaters don’t understand different cultures have different laws. Definitely never bring weed in your board bag if you go on a surf trip to Indonesia if you ever want to go home.
