In what way are you informed about the world?

Fox news is my go to for propaganda from the right.

CNN is my go to for propaganda from the left.

This is why I like the YouTube channel, "Featureman".

Just some good ol' fashioned cooking by an elderly man with some no-nonsense takes that serves as a veritable "no spin zone," unlike that asshat Bill O'Reilly. He basically never talks about politics, which is great, AND he is actually coherent, unlike Biden.

The two party system is a joke and both Republicans and Democrats have sold out the American people a long time ago and continue to do so on a daily basis.

If anyone knows of sources of objective journalism, please share. I check BBC periodically to see how the rest of the world views America.

Do you think your idea of an objective journalist potentially differs to mine?

Do you think your idea of an objective journalist potentially differs to mine?

That is a great question! In 2023, the idea/reality of objectivity is up for interpretation, which is pretty wild. Objective journalism at this point is likely more of a fairy tale than anything else. The media conglomerates own the major outlets and it is very sad that this "take" of mine is not driven by paranoia, but rather supported by facts.

There may very well be many journalists who are operating independently who are staying core to the ethos of investigative journalism. To those individuals, I applaud them.

To your point @SneakySecrets , while there may be minor differences between how you and I may operationally define an objective journalist, I expect that there will be far more overlap than difference.

ABC or SBS. I kinda hate the news these days but those two stations at least mostly seem like here's something that happened/is going to happen and here's facts we know. (Altho obvs that's always debatable).

I always hate when the news gets statements from random regular people and don't know why any normal person wouldn't just tell them to fuck off. It's always like "this is John Smith he lives at this address and was a witness to the crime. The criminals have said they will kill any witnesses but he has told us he will still give the police a statement next week, until then he will be at the shop he owns on highstreet that doesn't have any security cameras"

I don't

I stopped following the news because I had a baby last year and our TV is always playing some cartoons

It's pretty surreal when I hear my peers at work talking angrily/sad about our country's events and I just sit there listening for the first time what's going on lol

I kinda like being ignorant tbh

I quit most of the internet and media about 8 months ago. There is no benefit to getting bent about opinions that really mean nothing other than an enotional response. And, there’s some terrifying shit going on in the US as far as i am concerned, things that unless i wish to get into the streets and protest/engage, arent going to be affected by reading or hearing about them every day, every time i pick up this device. On that scale, i generally check in on Sunday to see what civil/human rights the supreme court is taking away and what not.

Counterspin and democracrynow offer a non-violent, civil rights/human rights set of perspectives on national and world issues. Can only take so much.

I follow local news with greater frequency. In this isolated, rural place there has been a strong, independent news scene with non-partisan blogs/websites and local radio shows. Definitely some objective and important journalism going on in the smaller, community based infospheres.

well shit. why are all the people I followed or watched as a kid turn out to be massive scumbags? anyways wont watch him anymore, thx for posting that.

Back on topic, I dont follow news too closely if Ive got a lot to do but I try to keep an eye on a forum not unlike this one with a weekly news megathread where people post a wide selection of sources and videos ranging from reuters to an obscure youtube channel owned by some turbo conservative retired ussr naval coast guard who shit talks the f16, it’s pretty cool because finding this stuff on my own would take days.

I also don’t really believe in objective journalism, we always tend to inject what we believe in what we write, so objective journalism is kind of a mirage imo. What I’d like to see is the return of gonzo journalism, with all the wild shit going down these days it would have an impact im sure. I also tend to check a journalist’s twitter after I read their article to check who they follow and what they tweets about its usually a good enough way to suss their politics out.

I get all my news from Facebook memes made by people at least 50 years old.
That's where you get the real news that mainstream media doesn't want you to know.

I don't follow the news, if anything that is relevant to me happens I usually just hear about it through various websites and forums I frequent and then maybe I'll research it if I care but otherwise yeah I just experience life without 'the news'

I'm with you. I have a 9 month at home and will rarely, passively watch some local news. I usually check BBC in the morning but thats it. My wife fills me in on the other garbage if I ask.

Was Reddit until I realized, then much later finally accepted, that being aware of the everyday atrocities outside of my little bubble did nothing but give me anxiety and depression.  If something actually affects me and I need to know I’ll find out eventually.  In the meantime I’ll continue focusing on myself and trying to be a better person.  I’m sure tons of crazy important stuff has happened since I stopped paying attention, yet my life hasn’t changed in any way but for the better.

I like to check out two sources that have opposing viewpoints. Any consistencies between the two are interpreted as facts.

I kinda like being ignorant tbh

I did this for a while a few years ago, and I agree. I was way happier when I wasn’t looking into all the bullshit. The only sucky part was that people would force the news upon me, even when I asked them not to. That and any time I told people I don’t pay attention to the news, politics, world events, etc., they immediately assumed I was on the side of whichever group they hated.

this

I used to be addicted to the news and information more generally. Now about once every two weeks I'll check a news site for a minute, get hooked for a day, feel like shit at night, and then be ready to go without for another two weeks or so. Trying to extend the news-less phases more and more. It's not just news though, reducing the input of any kind of random information, especially text (that is not acquired in a conscious, targeted manner, I'm an academic so I do a lot of that) is a kind of superfuel for my brain. My hardware speeds up very noticably if I give it less data to crunch.

Apple News, NPR, and whatever else I see on social media.

Having been a journalist/public affairs person in the navy, I take all news with a grain of salt and a degree of doubt.

If something sounds fishy or requires it, I do additional investigation into it.

I also have to look at fox and the other misinformation outlets to see what my crazy uncle is currently believing unfortunately.
