The same way you would clean any nice set of anal beads.

I use Speed Cream on mine.

First soak in a water detergent mix.
Rinse.
Alcohol wash.
Air can dry.
1 drop of Speed Cream.
Spin.
Right back up the keister…

From Bones Bearings Website:
https://bonesbearings.com/support/cleaner/

Solvents we recommend are Acetone, Methyl Ethyl Ketone, Citrus cleaner, and Denatured alcohol. All of these can be found in the paint section of your local hardware store.

Products we DO NOT recommend are petroleum-based products like; paint thinner, gasoline, kerosene, lacquer thinner, turpentine or anything that contains tolulene. These solvents aren’t adequate cleaners and should not be used in the bearing cleaning unit.

Whatever you use, make sure to dry your bearings and add the lubrication to them as soon as possible to keep them from rusting.

----

You dont need to buy that bearing cleaning unit, just shaking it around in any small container will have the same effect. could use an old pill bottle, tupperware, etc.

DON'T use water. Acetone dries up pretty much instantly – there's no need for anything else in the cleaning part.

Remove shields.
Immerse bearings into acetone (use a metal or ceramic bowl) – make sure your space is ventilated, you don't wanna breathe in too much of the fumes.
Stir for a while (screwdriver, fork, anything metallic) – dirt will drip to the bottom.
Remove bearings from bowl, place on solid paper (no napkins etc. as it can leave residue) to dry.
Let dry.
Add 1 drop of Speed Cream or sewing machine oil per one whole bearing (yes, just one).
Spin bearing to even out the oil.
Replace shields.
Proceed with ripping.

The guy who used to own our local indoor park would tell everyone to use gas. It does do a good job though.

I used the quantum Graphlo lube when I cleaned my Atoms and they've been doing pretty well. Don't use motor oil, tried that on a set of reds and it seemed to make it worse

I've been using paint thinner for the past while. Looks like it's not recommended by bones LOL

For acetone, it can be pretty harsh on a lot of things. For those that have used acetone for cleaning, does it dissolve bearing cages, which are usually some type of nylon/plastic?

No.

What would be the concern? Unnecessary? I use simple green mixed with water and a toothbrush to loosen the grease. rinse and immediately soak in acetone. Should I just use acetone and could that damage the nylon cage if left in contact too long?

People worry about rust.  As long as you dry em thoroughly, or do a follow up clean with alcohol or acetone its almost a complete non-issue.  I used to do citrus cleaner and a hot water rinse and thoroughly dry.  Never had a single issue.  I just use 99% alcohol now.  It's faster and I think it cleans just as well, plus its one step.

I've always used rubbing alcohol but the other day I used acetone and it worked extremely well, way better than the alcohol. I use a little Tupperware that's for salad dressing and shake it up. Dump out the liquid and repeat a couple more times til it stays clear even after shaking. Dries instantly and I didn't even relube them and they're running insanely fast, and we're talking cheap reds here.

Acetone does the trick, yes, and no, the nylon cages don't seem to be affected. I've done the process several times for various sets of bearings and have noticed no ill effects.

Bones cleaning unit.
Follow the directions.
Acetone, sometimes the dollar store has it.
Speed cream.

Made 3 home made versions that died. Sometimes catastrophically.

I know they're unnecessary but I like stupid little gadgets so I went to the local shop to get the Bones cleaning kit but they only had the Bronson one. It's pretty poorly designed... It's split into two columns with pre spacer things at the bottom and they give you 4 spacers and speed washers to finish since the case runs out of room to just use a final spacer for the last bearing lol... Still works but it's pretty annoying and kind of too small and leaks like a fucking sieve.

“Speed Cream” isn’t made from milk. You should definitely put a light coating of oil on your bearings.
This is not my SOTY. I'm telling my kids there was no SOTY for 2021

That kit is fucking terribad...the fucking lid doesn't even click into place...

I made a few 'bones' kits, honestly it's easier to just pick that up on a sale (I nabbed it with the bones bearing puller).

What about WD40??

Do you have to do this tonight?

WD40 is a mix of solvent and grease. It’s good for removing rust to unlock frozen nuts but it’s not ideal for bearings.

You have to remove (clean) the dirt and particles off the channel that the bearings roll over. That is what slows you down.

The speed cream or oil is just the last touch and you don’t want too much or it will attract gunk. One drop, spin and wipe the outside.

You can make one of those bearing cleaner things with a bolt and Gatorade bottle….

I never take out the cages anymore…..it’s a pain to line up all the bearings….

Coconut oil and especially avocado oil have really high smoke points. This means you can go faster.

Bro, NO. WD40 is the worst, it attracts dirt like a magnet. Read what people have posted here and clean your stuff properly. There are no shortcuts.

I had a set of spitfire cheapshots. That have been left for a week in acetone, and I’m pretty sure their cages have warped. They don’t spin by hand, but if you roll in the board it’s okayish.

Gone over to 93% alcohol.
Im too dumb to figure out how to make this drawing my profile pic.

I fully disassemble my bearings. Drop the parts into a plastic cup.
Acetone bath.
Tooth brush the plastic parts in soapy water.
Thats the important part.
Plastic cages are what collects filth that slows you down.

I reassemble them (wo shields now I'm over them)

If you don't live in a rainy area don't lube. Run um dry. It's faster.

If you do choose to lube use sewing machine oil. It's cheap and works good.
Plz stop killing each other

one time I pulled all the plastic cages, put the bearings loose in a jar with paint thinner....shook it up.....everything fell apart.  The inner races all popped out and it was a jar full of loose bearings....  My impression is the cages to some degree keep them in line as well as....it was a dumb move to shake it up vigorously.  But yeah....lost a set of swiss doing that.... I agree with you though that dirt does get stuck there, it's just to what degree I'm willing to spend time on it and it's sort of finicky, I've damaged the cages pulling them out and putting them back in.
