chris russell almost lost an eye but still shreds

surprised this hasn't been posted yet... I had no idea he went through that eye injury at swamp fest. dude got Mom'd - "you're gonna lose an eye playing fireworks!!!" he doesn't really get into details about what exactly happened... anyone got the scoop?

the line on that ramp where he does the alleyoop disco grind then backside ollie to nosegrind bash was amazing. dude is skating so much smoother but with still so much power.

Gregson is getting better and better behind the camera. I've also never seen one person not benefit in all aspects of life after training bjj. best of luck to Chris in his recovery from that injury.

(sorry if this didn't embed. I think there's been issues embedding on mobile.)

Dude is a tank and I'm glad this didn't take him out. Obviously he's a transition monster but his vert skills are pretty dialed too.

When I watch him skate, I always think of the Grosso quote "if almost every air you do is to disaster, that's just how you do airs" - not trying to throw shade, but that's pretty funny

Wow sorry, didn't realise I was dealing with a sick cunt here

I think about that quote every time I see him do an air to disaster too haha

thanks for this post!

Swamp fest talk starts around 51 minutes. I'm listening to it for the first time right now. He also said in the interview some dude also got a chunk of his calf blown off by the fireworks. I wonder if they'll be throwing fireworks around next year...

Talkin Schmit doesn't get enough love. The Jason Adams' interview about him getting sober was amazing.

Russel was always tough and good - but i seen an development in his skateboarding, since he is more into training
and less into drinking /smoking.  His skating is still rough but in a smoother more stylish way.

Air to Desaster was often for me a kind of cheating - but not the way Russel do it - its not a disaster its a super fast and fluid bash. Fronside straight leg bash in a backyard is special. Some of the lines where really cool.
Alley hoop fakie back smith to lip to fronside smith is in general a nice a trick - but he is doing it super fluid and stylish but still rough.

I like his development in Style.

Firworks is in general stupid shit to play around with. Never got it.
If you risk your own finger / ass - up to you - but shooting in crowds skating.
Would make a Chris Miller and leave the scene immediately.

Damn at surf fight training with gorilla hands. That a super legit gym. Bjj is my other hobby. It’s probably harder on the body than skating.

That vert footage was sick, it somehow didn't look like vert but in a really good way. I have no clue if that makes sense at all. The shifty back in a few times was nuts to me. I'm sure the person who tossed the fireworks feels pretty good about themselves.

Yes, I imagine it every time I’m somewhere with drunk assholes throwing fireworks.

Now I just leave.

I would have never figured in a million years that he would be into BJJ. I am surprised more skaters aren't doing BJJ cause I hear people get pretty addicted to it. I guess it's almost like this golf thing with skaters. You can never master it and to get better, you just have to play all the time.

i'm sure a lot of skaters do, maybe not so with pros. I trained for years and got pretty into it and definitely ran across plenty of skaters and surfers as well.

Shooting fireworks at people is a brainless disgusting move no matter how young or drunk you are, but so is going to a “fest” like that to begin with.

Edit:I hadn’t heard of this fella as it’s not my kind of skating but I’m so happy it wasn’t worst case scenario for him, having gone through things I went right to that place when he said “pit in your stomach & adrenaline”.

That fest looked like unhinged hell, especially for a 40 y old.
