You think being brand manager for NHS is a shitty job? What’s a good job?
[close]

Idk what good lucrative jobs exist in skateboarding, but being any kind of salesman sounds unappealing.

Maybe a good skate job would be designing a park and/or building said park. Something you can do with your hands.
[close]

That actually does sound like a cool job, but I bet there's only like 3 people designing skateparks in the entire US
[close]

Sounds like a convo between 2 people who have never contributed to a build or have any idea what goes into skatepark design. “3 people” lmao
[close]

There's probably at least 3 designers on each of the big park contractors, and obviously many laborers on any given site

Plus you're basically an architect whose work is critiqued everyday so there's that. Still probably a more rewarding job than doing general industry networking.

Skatepark builders are essentially Carnies. Circus folk. Nomads, you know? Smell like cabbage. Small hands.

But seriously, most skatepark designers are builders too. There might be a few guys who throw together a CAD drawing for the township managers but that’s not anyone’s full time job.

I think I’d rather shill for NHS and commentate contests.

zumiez griptappe applier remover

Skatepark employee on the days that's it's just a glorified daycare, to a bunch of brats that are strictly there to not throw away their candy wrappers.

I'm going to choke you with those nerd ropes if you don't use the garbage can, and ride your skateboard for at least five minutes today.
I'm posting from my blackberry wtf?!?!?

I’d say Skateshop.  It would suck when kids would ask me to cut out the enjoi panda on their grip tape and when moms would demand a refund when their kid broke a deck right away.  I think I made $6.00 an hour too.

I would think being a middle aged box packer for like CCS must not feel too great but then again, I’m sure it’s super low stress and you get to be in involved in something you’re passionate about. The second thing that comes to mind is whoever was TM for termite back in the day. Trying to manage a group of young, hyper skate rats on a trip couldn’t have been fun.
[close]

I said this a million times, but I knew a guy who worked at several local skate shops, and he was always getting shit all over by the bosses, never made any money, and never had health insurance or anything like that. He started working at CCS, and they gave him insurance, paid him more than he had ever made it skate shop, and is generally much happier there than at the super exploitative local shops.

Small businesses are some of the most exploitative businesses of all.

Small businesses account for the majority of both safety and labor violations.
This is not my SOTY. I'm telling my kids there was no SOTY for 2021

Any job in skateboarding is respecting efforts, commitment and  time in comparison with other professions bad.
My father told me early if you put half the effort
you put into skateboarding in any other profession
you never need to be worried about money.
He was right - after 30 years I am still hyped to skate and never loose my drive- because I never had the aim/ need to make money with it…
But with my job I put only minimum effort in, working
80% from home at least the last 5 years I do good money the last 20 years.

Stop  dreaming about working in skateboarding.
Keep dreaming about skating, and separate your love and your financial income.

Skateshop I'd imagine. I worked retail and in most instances retail jobs are insufferable.

I like how Paul F Tompkins put it; working in retail “you see the ugly face of humanity”

Since Sinclair has like 9 jobs in the skate industry there’s a chance Mike has the best job in the industry and the worst at the same time.

How many times throughout the existence of skateboarding have people been paid in burgers and weed. Probably somewhat common.

What I was thinking is that most of those larger skateparks are usually built my one of only a handful of companies (evergreen skateparks, California skateparks etc.), so the amount of people who do the actual design work of skateparks is probably very small. And smaller skateparks for smaller towns, maybe some people from the community get together to design the park but I'd imagine that kind of thing is on a volunteer basis and no one gets paid to design the park or if they do its not a lot of money.
