Childhood skateboard thoughts (dumb)
« on: September 15, 2023, 10:53:27 AM »
A conversation with a buddy during the last sesh reminded me of some silly thoughts I had about skating as a kid. A big part of this was a division between "punk" skaters and "rap" skaters. I didn't know about the words "fresh" or "hesh" and it had more to do with trick selection.

Stances: Regular - Punk  Goofy - Rap
Flip Tricks: Kickflip - Punk   Heelflip - Rap
360 flip - Punk  Hardflip - Rap
Grinds and Slides: Front Board - Punk   Back Tail - Rap
Nosegrind - Punk  5-0 - Rap
Other tricks/Obstacles: Hand rails - Punk  Manual pads - Rap
Flatbar - Punk   Box - Rap
Fakie tricks - Punk  Nollie tricks - Rap
ETC.

Clearly the thoughts of a child, mostly stupid, but some kind of accurate (gnar vs tech lol)

Does anyone else remember funny/dumb/weird thoughts they had about skating as a child?

5-0 is most def punk, and front nosegrind is Rap. Can confirm your child mind got that one twisted for sure

LOL. I fuck with this.  I imagine that my childhood brain would process this similar. As others mention 5-0 / nollie feels more accurate the other way around. One thing though: 360 flip never felt punk to me. That was already close to Rap territory. Impossible or three shuv would be punk imo.

Impossible: Punk

Is it even possible to impossible with really baggy pants? The greatest impossiblers of all time (Ed, Dylan) were team highwaters

Switch Pop Shuvit: Rap

I love this trick and i feel like you only see it from g'd out dudes who pop the ever loving fuck out of it

I started in the late 80s and I didn’t know pro’s existed. I thought Tony “Hawk”, Tommy G, etc were all made up names, sort of like cartoon characters. I got to share this story w Lance a few years ago, and he got a kick out of it.

Of course the irony is Daewon rips transition and Wade did one of the first 'fresh' tricks down hubba hideout.

We already HAVE one of the threads back home, sweety.

We just got you a brand new one back in January & you barely use it: it’s only 10 pages deep, or so.

Definitely stupid and definitely kinda racist, but my crew always thought both bigspins and heelflips were mostly "black people" tricks

When I was younger I thought if you were a pro you had every trick and could skate every obstacle; came to find out a lil later that some pros might not be able to hardflip, so pros might not be able to bluntslide, some pros might not be able to skate handrails, etc but for a while I thought if you were pro you could do every trick and skate every obstacle.

Also, I thought everything in skate vids was first try, I thought you had to be consistent as fuck to be a pro, I wasn’t aware that some tricks may take multiple tries over days or weeks or months.

I was skating with my black friend like 2 years ago and some dude said the same thing to us when my friend did a heelflip. It really bugged my friend and we left soon after. I see that kook around lately and he tries to be nice to me but I don’t fuck with him after he made my friend uncomfortable that day.

Understandable. I'm glad I had the awareness to never say that in public, let alone to a person of color

Someone older referred to a boardslide as a "rail slide" in a pic where someone happened to be doing one on a rail.

I then believed for a time the name of the board slide was dictated by the material. So a boardslide on a brick ledge would be a "brick slide", one on a curb would be a "curb slide", etc.

I was obsessed with basketball when I was a kid and when i got older and into skating and punk music as a teenager I thought I couldn't like sport anymore because it wasn't punk. Grew out of that attitude by about 19 and I still love playing and watching basketball almost as much as I love skating

while this all really stupid, i relate to the premise, and agree that they are correct except for 5-0 and ng being the wrong way round.

I clearly remember railslide being used as a proper term for a boardslide. But that was really long ago like 1989/1990. and that was in Germany - so my experience might be completely different from anyone else’s experience during that time

Pretty sure it was Geoff Rowley (out of many others) who also thought that way as a kid, and once said that as a result he had naturally learned to rarely miss tricks, because for the longest time he was this convinced tricks just weren't supposed to be missed. That actually isn't dumb and makes complete sense if you ask me.

To be fair, some of the pros with the best selling decks back then had unusual names. How many people with the last name Mountain have you met in your life? Blender, Ruff, Hawk, Hosoi, etc. Natas Kaupas? Lester Kasai? No wonder you didn't think these were real people until you got a magazine or saw a video.

Agreed.
Guess I’m punk even though I’d still hit manny pads. Back 180 to nose mannys at speed are punk.

My teenage self thought that pros landed every trick first try and if it was in a video it was a make(looking at you Stacy Peralta). That kinda helped me though, since I spent so many hours trying to get my lines wired and then getting them fast.
