P. Rod "can't skate leather"
« on: December 24, 2023, 02:52:55 PM »
saw in an interview P. Rod says he only skates in suede because he cannot skate in leather.

I've never skated in leather either but by accident, never a conscious thought. Anyone else feel like P. Rod about shoe upper materials?

I like leather for better or worse.
It is usually consistent on all shoes. Not talking about durability but grip.

But i skated suede that felt way different from shoe to shoe, even colorway to colorway. Some grabbed the shoe really well and others felt like i was skating without grip.

Mind you i mostly skate shell toes so i prefer rubber i guess ::)

I skate leather rather than suede, usually skating a club c and the suede options kinda blow out quickly so I stick to action leather or whatever they wanna call it

I prefer leather, but I’m old and like stiff shoes. I also feel like you get slightly more weather resistance with leather.

Suede is still leather. It’s just a more pliable form that doesn’t have the rind on the outside.

Suede feels more grippy/ I have more control with my flip tricks than leather does imo

Although I end up paying for it in soreness later, I need all the grip and boardfeel I can get, so suede vulcs with a good insole are the way to go for me.  For all the trash I’ve talked about Soletech, the G6 vulc slipons are the best fitting/feeling shoe I’ve skated in ages.

I had an all leather pair of Axions in 1997 and they were some of the worst shoes I ever skated. Haven’t even considered leather since the.

In my experience. Leather has a slick flick for me. Nothing beats the grab suede has.

I was stuck on the g6 wino and the slip on for some time. They had a good flick. Don't know why I stopped skating them. I always found some shit colorways on sale for under $50.

I've learned to not believe pros when they have off-handed comments like this. Unless they go into a lot of detail, it seems like they usually don't actually know what they'rt talking about.

I do find the Nike sb leather to be a little slippery in the beginning. So I imagine if you’re Prod and you have to do a demo or something, you dont want to deal with breaking in new leather.

But yeah obvious hyperbole from Paul.

I prefer suede but have skated plenty leather shoes. Ultimately comes down to the quality of materials. Biggest downside to leather is that aesthetically they can look destroyed after just a session or two despite how well the actual material holds up
