2024 Unpopular Setup Thread
« on: December 30, 2023, 03:15:39 PM »
Is your new setup a shame and disgrace to you on slap?

Do you skip posting because your new ride doesn’t fit in?

Here’s where you can post it:

Please include the specifics. What’s not popular and why, and why do you not care.

Here’s my own example:

Nobody likes Powell because they fired their team when Peralta came back in 2013, after the Fun video. Flight decks aren’t popular because they last too long and feel different. Clear Jessup let’s you see air bubbles, but sells for a lot less. Radials fulls are heavy and chunky, but shred gnarly crust like nothing else.

The rest seems pretty normal:
6.1 Ventures with ace low cushions so they don’t freeze up in the cold.
Swiss ceramics.
Old wknd hardware.

The Gear Madness Thread helped me decide to try to ride the same stuff, not change something out every couple of weeks, looking for the grail. This is mostly the same as my favorite cruiser/dog walking board. Minus the 5.6’s, risers, China whites, and 75 mm thunder juices.
🙂

I skate mini logo boards because they’re cheap and very flat.

I’m working my way through a box of element boards I bought on fb marketplace for $15/board.

I end up skating Indy’s because they’re familiar and best for me.

I’m an x formula convert from formula four.

2023 was a strange year.  Feels bad man.

my setup is unpopular in the sense that i only keep a deck on ice, and i usually buy shop decks or whatever a homie has thats roughly the size i skate. otherwise my trucks and wheels are so popular its painful...

Setup feels better.  Was riding 8.75 AH, wide thunders, & Formula 4 at the beginning of year.  The slap complete to the weenie complete.  I’m ok with it, I just turned 30.  Being able to flip my board and a smoother ride is welcomed over looking cool.

My first set up took my over 3 hours to build but I'd spread that out over 4 days

Didn't come with trucks or wheels but it's complete

My second setup is probably the finest quality in craftsmanship that I've ever seen in a deck

Only problem is that it's a Santa Cruz board
Non-NHS trucks & wheels
Bones Swiss ceramics
9.5 board with 14wb

It's a shape board so old heads like me can finally own a Fabiana board and acutely skate it. I hope Meow learns from this

NHS / SC woood is fine (it's still DSM). Some of the best, stiff/poppiest wood out. Skate what you like.

I really like that deck, whoever did the art killed it; 14" wb kept me from getting one. Nice and clean set-up!

Hockey deck with Tensors and Orbs wheels. Skate in a wrestling singlet and Crocs and film a part with mostly fingerflips, set to Alien Ant Farm’s cover of Smooth Criminal. Also, wear a beer helmet covered in Hook Ups stickers for your enders.

Indy’s on a DLX board just feels like cheating on one of them.
I’m not letting my YouTube algorithm anywhere near that video.

I rode venture hi 5.2s with 1/8" riders on 7.75-7.875s for the last 5 years. Just bought some Indy forged 129s and ditched the risers. I can finally kickflip again, treflips feel better too. I do miss the boosted (feeling) nollie 180s though.

This has lead me down a path of obsessing over wheelbase. Has to be under 14" or I'm not having it. Pickings are slim. Thank god for palace.

I’m skating Venture 6.1s on a Creature right now. Rhino’s guest model too. Feels like I’m doing something illegal.

And I'm here worrying about tightening the nut beyond flush!

As for unpopular setups. Nearly everyone I see in the park my age is skating big shaped boards with Indys and 60mm wheels. It makes me want to actively rebel. Favouring my 8.5 popsicle over the Dane1 I also have setup. I know it's because they are bowl guys but I really don't want to fit in.

When your trucks are that tight, does it really matter if the brands match?

Probably not all that much, difference in height would be the biggest issue.

But if those are ace lows i think they are the same height as forged plate thunders (49mm)

Is Bam actually a genius and in total control?

.....probably not.
