Fuck truck sizing
« on: January 12, 2024, 05:02:22 PM »
Can we all agree truck sizing is totally stupid?

I totally get that Indy size the hanger and Thunder size the full axle or vice versa, but come on. It’s all totally stupid. Why the the hell are there truck brands that everyone rags on like Krux that can do 8”, 8.25” etc that make perfect sense.

And then you’ve got Ace which is arguably the worst culprit of them all with such numbers pulled out of their ass like 44, 55, 66 which mean different things between the classics and AF1s

It’s 2024, we’ve put a person on the moon, your pocket contains a computer far more powerful than the one that cracked the enigma, the Sopranos has completed television. Why the hell can’t we have a universal metric for truck sizing?

Imagine if every board company decided they weren’t gonna use inch’s tomorrow, or wheels didn’t come in millimetres. And as a Euro, I can totally understand metric vs imperial, but at least they’re on the opposite side of a ruler

These arbitrary numbers are a skateboarding tradition. It's funny. You'll figure it out. It's not that hard.

Ace even have the hanger size in inches engraved on their AF1s.

Whilst I think we can all agree on the truck sizing numbers being kind of weird and annoying in their oft non-referential nature, it's really not that big of a deal.

The only way I can really imagine it being a true practical issue is if you were buying online and had NO idea what you were doing - but even then you could google a truck sizing chart and all your problems would be solved in a second.

If you truly are challenged by truck sizing just make sure you shop in physical stores and actually put the trucks against your board before you buy them...or just figure out what you like and keep riding the same shit.

If you're so gear-mad that you're buying different trucks constantly you should just do the due research.

I definitely get your point and mostly agree but.. it’s easier to just use that powerful computer in your pocket to look up the size charts. They’re easily accessible on the internet. And how often are you changing truck sizes anyways?

Call it brand lock-in. It’s difficult to figure out what truck you should go with if you change from Indy to Ace or vice versa. Better to just stick with the brand you know and love.

I like that it's complicated (well to new kids/parents etc) makes them to go to the local shop instead of Amazon.

What truck company doesn’t have a chart? It’s not like people are switching truck brands every time they get set up a new board. Even then, there’s 10-15 brands. (Who’s riding Silver or Theeve?) You can always ask a shop employee if you’re that perplexed about sizing.

If truck sizing is truly a problem for someone, they should probably be very happy about the size of their problems.

Yea, you right..... But

if it was all uniform and simple like that, there would be less opportunities to flex my elite gear knowledge on these fools.

And that just sounds awful.

People LOVE when I do that.

It’s really not at all difficult to figure out what size trucks you need switching from brand to brand. If doing a simple conversion is what’s locking you into one brand then I don’t know how to help you.

Be wary of charts. That one has errors. 181= 10" axle. 161s= 9.125" axle.

Maybe I have more real estate in my brain for useless info than most but I memorized each of the main truck brands' sizing names within a day of having intention of doing so. Even AF1 vs classic Ace sizing differences. Weird flex but I'm proud.

Yeah, there's actually not that much to remember, plus once you remember the "logic" of each truck brand (be it that the logic can be fuzzy), figuring out an individual size is pretty easy. And y'know, it takes like 3 seconds to put a search engine to work.

Majority of people here seem to not give a shit about the naming. Take less than 10 seconds to google a truck sizing guide and problem solved.

allright im not one to complain about the naming of the sizing and all. but i hate when a size chart says "this size for this size deck" instead of just saying how wide the truck actually is.
