I know and love the best new movie thread but I’ve been addicted to TCM lately and was wondering if anyone had recommendations for older films ?

North By Northwest is a classic if you've never seen it. Ten Little Indians (1965) is also really good

Is TCM a specific style or just classic movies in general? About once a year I'll go on tubi and have a pretty decent run with classic movies. But it's usually Japanese and Italian stuff.

Rope, the hitchhiker, rear window, psycho, defiant ones, Maltese Falcon, M are all good

Yeah man Preston Sturges movies are great. Miracle at Morgan's Creek is another banger. Billy Wilder (1,2,3 or The Apartment) and Howard Hawk's comedies (Ball of Fire or Bringing Up Baby) are great along the same lines and are about as TCM as you can get.

If anybody in your life has a cable login you can use, you can stream TCM for free on most devices through their app. I think it's Live stream based and then also has VODs of the same stuff their streaming.

This movie is great. Also recommend "Harvey" with Jimmy Stewart

I agree with the screwball comedy route. See also: My Man Godfrey, The Lady Eve, Some Like it Hot, and Easy Living (or any old movie with Automats).

1940s film noir is also very TCM-esque. if your visual tastes have been informed by skate videos, you might appreciate their documentary realism and hint of German expressionism. My favorites are Kiss Me Deadly, Cross Cross, He Walked by Night, T-Men and Raw Deal. Lizbeth Scott is my favorite actor of that era and Too Late for Tears is probably her best movie, most of which are good.

I would recommend subscribing to Criterion Channel. It's the only streaming service I've held continuously.

Any French new wave recommendations?

Deep cuts or the classics?    If you want the Venn Diagram between TCM and FNW - Mickey One or Bonnie and Clyde

Any French new wave recommendations?

Really enjoyed Breathless and Pierot Le Fou.  Not sure if 8 1/2 and The 400 Blows count as new wave but also great movies.  Took a break from French films after watching Weekend so I'd pass on that Godard one

Besides some of the standard picks (The 400 Blows, Vivre sa vie, Jules and Jim, etc.), Mississippi Mermaid and Bay of Angels are some of my favorites. Outside of new wave, Elevator to the Gallows and Diary of a Chambermaid (obviously I'm a fan of Jeanne Moreau).

400 blows is the classic example, but I don’t think 81/2 counts bc it’s Italian

Was great when they had The Last Drive in (Joe Bob Briggs show) still.
Silent Sunday’s are good as well.

I sorta can't deal with the pre-movie bits but the archive of Joe Bob movies on the AMC app is pretty serious. They're probably all from the Shudder era but they have cranked out episodes and the movies are uncut. I watched Fulci's The Beyond like this recently since it was the only way to stream it and was cool if you don't mind scrubbing through a little bit or if you're down for Joe Bob's program.

The first time I saw Kinji Fukasaku's "Street Mobster" was uncut on TCM. It was a great introduction to Fukasaku and he has become a top 5 director to me. Would do bad things to see all of his "Battles Without Honor and Humanity" series on the big screen in a consecutive session.

I like most of his rants but yeah, they’re not for everyone.
