Can’t skate… comparable hobbies?

When you can’t skate for a long time (or ever again), what are some things you do to fill the gap?

I find riding a bike is a a lot like the enjoyment which can be experienced just getting to the spot….

Except you don’t get to skate…..

I don’t know if anything could ever totally replace skateboarding for me (which is a tough reality), but rock climbing/bouldering is very comparable to me. Problem solving, lots of different techniques to learn, physically demanding, and often requires lots of attempts on the same thing until you finally get it. And there are different levels of “getting it” in terms of style, technique, cleanliness. And if you’re into it you can also take it outdoors vs the gym (street vs park, etc). It also works different parts of your body in case it’s a leg situation you’re dealing with re: not being able to skate.

I usually have to take a break from skating in the summer due to some crazy heat allergy thing I have.
I just picked up a beginner compound bow.
Set up a target block in my back yard and it’s been really fun. Hitting the bullseye is a pretty good feeling, definitely a good dopamine hit.

One of my favorites so far. Creativity is huge in cooking as well.

Playing music. Pick up an instrument and start jamming with friends. No need to have any know how, it comes naturally by “just doing”.

Closest feeling I get to skating.
Do you get deja vu, huh?

Looking in the mirror when I’m high at night asking “who am I?”

Photography is pretty similar when it comes to spot finding and progression and is something that goes hand in hand with skating.

I’ve been considering moving closer to the ocean so I can start surfing as I sunset out of skating.   Know nothing about surfing though, can anybody chime in with the parallels and also how it’s different from skating?

Exercise in general

But yeah nothing comes close and I always wonder if most people have never experienced the feeling we get from skateboarding or if they even know that type of connection exists

Playing a musical instrument.

While not as physical as skating (except maybe for playing drums), it has a similar balance of needing practice to create muscle memory as well as a mix of creativity and artistry mixed with technical mastery.
Warm Up Zone. Let's watch some skateboarding videos.

Surfing and cycling. Both complimentary to skateboarding and a lot of fun but both kooky subcultures I'm not super into.

I've got a few friends that are big into cycling and race and stuff and there seems to be less complaining there than even one Slap video thread.

Any time you get a bunch of hyper competitive adult males doing the same thing there's going to be dudes who take things way too seriously. In skating it's often confusing because hyper cool guy'ing is the equivalent and harder to detect because it can seem more genuine.

This. I also suck at both which makes it extra comparable

Disc golf is also good; much cheaper, and more casual.

Do you have nieces or nephews interested in skating? Teach skateboarding. Be a big brother to some skate kids and share the stoke. Give them rides to the spots or skatepark.

Like people have said, riding bikes is the answer. I can't skate much anymore and I find it's about the closest you'll get and it's way better for your body. Riding a mountain bike on trails can kinda feel like skating parks or pools, but there's all different styles of riding so try some different stuff out if you can.

Snowboarding is closest analog. Disc Golf and bowling are good and more accessible that I've seen enjoyed by many skaters.

Hiking, playing the guitar, building stuff for other people to skate are some of the things you could try. Sucks but not much fills that void. I guess when I would play baseball working on my batting and pitching was kind of similar in a way. I liked it because it was something I could do on my own and there are a lot of little micro movements and tweaking things like skating.

I started surfing about eight years ago and I would say it’s something I might have built my life around if I’d started as a kid. I’m not good at it but I can do the basics pretty well.

When you get good enough to catch waves consistently it’s basically like skating a snake run on a cruiser board. It’s so fun.

I’d say the highs might be higher than skating. I’ve had days that still feel magical. Out on the water, suns out, waves breaking perfectly, me surfing well. When it comes together it’s amazing.

Problem is even a somewhat good day is rare. Mostly you’re surfing crappy waves surrounded by assholes fighting to take your crappy wave. Skating is fun much more of the time. That’s my feeling anyway.

Tennis.

Surfing is very comparable.

If injured, play a stringed instrument or hop on Fiverr and get paid to run SQL scripts or do data analysis.
