Favorite sized Thunders
Tyler90:
My 9yo son and I started skating back in February.
We started on 7.5” & 7.75” decks and I have since moved him up to a 8” for transition/park skating while I alternate between a 8.5” on 149 standards (team?) and now a 8.75” on 151 hollow lights.
I haven’t skated more than a couple hours on the 151 hollow lights but the 149’s seem to lock in better on our flat bar.
I realize this could be due to wheel shape&size differential too..
149 has 55mm spitfire f4 radials
151 is equipped with 54mm x99 v5 shape.
Do you feel that slimmer Thunder trucks grind more consistently, or do you think wheel shape/size plays more of a factor?
What’s your favorite Thunder / Wheel combo?
Thanks for your input.
Peace

Not having a Fred Gall option in a poll is one of Slap's capital sins.

When I did skate thunders 148 was my go to choice... I don't want to go through truck madness again

If you’re fairly new to skateboarding as you say, then I don’t think it’s worth getting into the weeds on this. I don’t think that anything +/- .25” or so will make a big impact on your skating this early on. It may be true that you felt a difference between your 149s and 151s but it also could’ve been that you were having a better session due to various other factors other than a small difference in truck width. In general just ride whatever feels nice to you/try not to get too hung up on slight differences in gear and you’ll be better for it.
If you absolutely can’t help yourself, dive into one of the many threads here on the minutia of wheel shapes, truck setups, wheelbase, etc. but beware that letting these things consume you will probably make you spend more money skate worse
