Marc is too real and sensitive for the internet era, him being outside all this is probably the best decision for his mental health, hope he is fine

He describes his fucked up childhood in interviews. Plenty of people end up like MJ from that but they don’t do dope shit on a skateboard.

It sucks that he contributed to a company's biggest videos and period in history in such a big way and instead of rewarding and helping him they fucked him over and left him to dry. Made me lost all of my childhood respect for Carroll and the Crail camp in general. Hopefully Rick was not equally a part in that childish shit. They had to know that any logical adult wasn't going to stick with an already floundering shoe brand that wasn't paying him when they could go to Adidas and likely make more on a few color ways. The drama probably dramatically impacted any brand's desire to work with him for fear of extra industry baggage.

I think Daniel Wheatley touched on it in his Bunt interview, where Carroll was pretty much paranoid about everyone jumping ship to Nike and other corporate brands.  It sounds like they didn’t handle it well and made a bunch of harsh decisions.  While I think they were dicks about MJs departure, I also am sympathetic.  They spent all this money and invested in all these skaters for years to create a climactic video and all the video did was set each skater up with a golden opportunity to leave for a corporate shoe company.  That being said, Pretty Sweet really felt like crailtap was prioritizing the younger generation over the older pros so it felt inevitable that they would leave (cutting Gino footage and other good footage from established pros was a dumb move IMO.  The Ams also never really bloomed in the end).

Anybody got a link to the MJ interview where he claims he would never jump ship and take a check from a corporate brand that came out just a little before he did the thing?

Can't feel too bad when they kept producing shitty shoes, weren't paying riders, and didn't really do much with their brand after. The product itself didn't compare to what the bigger brands offered at the same or even slightly higher cost. Their image got stale as well like I didn't care about the Trunk Boyz then and wasn't gunna magically support the brand to fund them.

Could it be that they spent a ton of money for the high end videos?

I’m not complaining fully flared was epic and THE vid at the time. But it might not have returned the investment even though I became a frequent Lakai buyer. But later all the money probably went to golf courses and coke for the inner circle.
I would think twice too whether or not iI keep sacrificing my body for such a company/management.

Maybe it’s been brought up already in another thread but i don’t think he was mentioned at all in the chocolate 30 year thing? which makes me assume the hatchet hasn’t been buried between them.
Were there mj boards displayed? Dude clocked in so much work for chocolate.
Saddened me a bit to see that group photo without him.

Wherever marc is, i wish him peace and wellness

Same goes to y’all pals, happy holidays

Remember when Carroll completely lied about Marc in a drug-induced Jenkem phone call rant and the entire skate internet, including Slap, had Carroll's dick so far down their throat that they did everything they could to shame and treat Marc like complete shit?

I do. I'd be gone too. One of the best to ever do it and everyone turned on him for seeking better employment. As if they'd stay at a job that didn't pay them or owe their boss an explanation while seeking other opportunities.

Its funny how few people actually admit to it being like that, but it was. Now everyones all on the "where is MJ? i miss MJ" tip. its fucking lame how much people love to break someone down and pile on then act like they didn't do it.

You...were right, Rupert. And we were wrong...

As much as slap loves to hate on MJ, he is one of the best.

But fuck Mike Carrol / Rick Howard, and that weasel sycophant Sam Smyth. Carrol and Howard are shady as fuck, and people seem to overlook how terrible they have been due to being legends.

But in the end crailtap is barley keeping their lights on, and
Lakai well nothing else needs to be said. Shaudenfrauden baby

Yea man I agree, I’m sure things are sour but not including his boards is insulting as fuck, dude started yeah right with a bang and truthfully his is the only part from FF I still watch, he put so much into that shit and for them to basically act like it didn’t happen is shitty, wether they buried the hatchet or not, and thanks for the well wishes powdered toast man, hope you get a Log! I have a hard time understanding how a group off people can put so much hard work and love into something, built it together and then end up not speaking to each other. The beef can't be bigger then what they created together. Skating that hard, filming, doing tours, interviews, signings, doing shoes, deck and merch togehter,be in video games etc. All this and you can't resolve an issue ? If Marc wanted to go to Adidas, let him go. Thank him for evertything good he did for the company and move on. Not blaming Crailtap or MJ,I just wish people would deal with these issues with more understating. The industry is small on the global or local level and there are only a few people who put so much love into skating so is hard seeing them at war.

I have to admit to being one of the biggest Carroll fans before this whole situation.

But looking at it now, he kinda revealed himself in the interview. Wannabe Mogul with an ego problem. Can’t even enjoy his old parts anymore now.

And I just had this thought while watching a few old Marc Johnson parts recently,
was there anyone on Crail at that time that did a better job at putting out parts? Just look at the pretty sweet part as a comeback after fully flared.
I think a lot of pros would’ve been so burnt out after doing what he did for his Lakai part. He still comes through with a really good part for his board sponsor as a follow up and as a result gets a pay cut.

We don’t know what went on behind the scenes, what promises have been made, etc.

But I know that this whole situation, including the interview afterwards, could be pretty harsh on you, especially if you’re a sensitive person.

I just hope Marc is doing alright and he knows that some people don’t think he did anything wrong with the Adidas move.

And I hope he gets his mind free enough to bless us with some more footage. Whatever level it may be.

Kinda crazy that even though all these PALS who dont really know shit (me included), but have for years heard about the weird rumors and shit skate companies do, still managed to villainize MJ. I am glad that he got to say his piece, I just wish it didnt mean he would vanish in the end.

Dude will forever be one of my favorites

Lol. Eldee is definitely a human. He’s like a raider on horse back who’s kinda scared to do battle. Somehow he closes his eyes and swings his sword wildly and wakes up in a pile of dead orcs.

Not tuned in, however, Megan had a post years ago about telling Carroll someone had seen him just casually sniffing coc in a hotel lobby, and he needed to chill.

Again that was years ago.  I’m sure he’s chilled since.  He was a big Kratom advocate, when he was diagnosed with Lupus.  Kratom is horrible for people using it long term from what I’ve seen.
