Andy Roy basically made a career out only being able to boneless, not that that’s anything to admire, just an observation

I like this part but I think his main claim to fame was just for being a hellraiser.

I enjoy Dills interviews and other non-skate content. Sure he’s pretentious and desperate to sound cool but he’s still entertaining.

Back in the 2000s, a friend of mine would loudly sing DONT TOUCH ME if creepy guys tried to creep on/put their hands on her at the bar. Always enjoyed it.

It's always been weird to me how much skaters fetishize being "old". And I feel like it's mostly transition skaters too, cuz I swear I've heard 18 year olds talk about how over the hill they are while being the youngest ones on the session by at least a decade.

For competition transition skating where the number of spins you can do means money it maybe is even a real thing.

But when you've got the 20-30 year olds complaining about being too old, they've just forgotten how falling used to hurt even when you were a kid and how out of shape you were after the winter even back then..

Unless I'm talking to friends or other older guys I never bring up my age on a session (unless someone asks).
But still, I'm not bothered by people who do, not because I think it's cool or necessary, I just understand what they're going through.

It's a hard pill to swallow accepting that you're past your prime and you'll never be as good as you once were at your favorite thing in the world. Especially since skating inevitably becomes such a big part of your life and personality.
The whole "old guy doing my best" comes in because people don't want to say "I just suck at skateboarding and that's all there is to it", especially when they were once much, much better than they are now.

I love it when people can successfully age gracefully, but I have empathy for people who struggle to do so.
It's not always easy for me either.

I feel this (both in sentiment and literally), but I'm more talking about people behaving like they're way older than they actually are. I was recently skating with someone who always complains about what an "old man" they are, but they're like 24, and on that particular session he was talking to people who were literally 20 years older than him. Just made for a really awkward vibe for those of us just trying to skate and have some fun.

I also feel like people in general just have a weird attitude about aging. I have peers my age who act like being 30 is straight up decrepit because they themselves just don't really do anything, and they do this weird projection about it when they find out that I'm still reasonably physically active at 33.

Aging definitely hurts your skating, but I think it’s usually injuries that end up causing more of a decline, and the average person that skates does not have the same focus on recovery or resources available to recover as a pro skater. Also, if you get a major injury when you’re young, you can get back quicker/easier but those effects will start to linger more with age.

The point being you can be 26 coming off a major knee injury that you aren’t able to properly rehab for due to work/life and be in much worse shape than a 38 year old dude who’s shifted to lower impact skating and exercises regularly.

Ah I see, apparently my reading comprehension is suffering today.
Yeah I get pretty annoyed when some dude is like "now that I've hit the old, old age of 31 I just carve around and do slappys on my 19" wide Heroin board".
Bitch 31 got nothing to do with it, you're just out of shape.
I'm 13 years older than you and still flipping my board and skating the tall ledge.
And my knees are a goddamn disaster, I wear two knee braces when I skate.
(one on each knee, not two on one knee)

Skateboarding is objectively tough on the body but mainly skaters just take shit care of ourselves. Diet of bodega food malt liquor and weed and 0 stretching/resistance training/actual cardio will eventually catch up with you

the fetishization of old age in skateboarding is why the industry is dying, shit is turning into cricket

In the "developed" world, there are significantly fewer young people now than there were a few decades ago. Skateboard marketing simple reflects that reality. I would say that this is also reflected in the sentiment @pizzafliptofakie is sharing.

Most people quit skating before they turn 18, so yea 31 is an 'old skater'. Even though i am older than that, and dont consider myself an 'old person'

Just like how a 31 year old would be an 'old roblox player' because most people playing roblox are literally children.

I would guess less than 5% of skaters make it all the way through their 20s without quitting.

P Rod is not elite, he is not in the GOAT conversation, his reputation has way overrun his actual output. He was just a kid who was good who did just enough to stay relevant. He has no signature clips/tricks (aside from maybe the NAC which is more of a bit than anything).

He should really be discussed as “remember that guy? He was pretty good” instead of acting like he’s some elder statesman that changed skateboarding.
If you see offensive comments, just let it go into one eye and let it out of the other eye, no tears and not sadness or anger.

Counterpoint - the rod dominated every contest for almost a decade. He's arguably the best street contest skater of all time. He's relevant in the way that Cab is in that way

fully agree @BartHarleyJarvis, he was always a good skateboarder but i never thought he was "the best" in any way (other than at fluffing his own ego and reputation)

counter-counterpoint: who cares about street skateboarding contests? the only reason we give those 80s vert contests weight because that's all there was, i don't see why anyone should truly care about contest results past 1990 or whenever the skate video became king

Couldn't agree more. If contest skating is your thing, then uhhh... good for you. If you enjoy the kind of skating I think most people enjoy, PRod isn't even in the top 100 skaters of the last 25 years.
