'The Danny Way story'

Danny Way, Josh Swindell, and Steven Matus were at a bar in LA. They were drunk. They some how came into contact with the Keith Ogden, who was homosexual. There was an altercation. At then end Mr. Ogden was dead with a cinderblock to the head. Swindell claims the Ogden was really drunk, had a gun, and kept coming-on to Swindell and the others. Swindell admits to hitting Ogden. However, Swindell claims that Ogden had a pre-exisitng head injury that lead to his death. Without this injury, I guess it would have just been a "normal" gay bashing. The other side of the story was that Swindell and crew were out looking to beat up someone who was gay. Danny Way was never charged with anything but I believe he was at the trial.

There were various stories on this event and trial in other mags, but never in any major skate publications. Strange huh? I'm sure people on here will poke holes in this or deny Way's involvement, but he was there and it's WELL known that Swindell took the heat to protect him. There's also the Big Brother interview with Way who gets VERY angry when asked about the possibility of his son being gay...and him going off on the subject.

Yes, he is Mr. Megaramp / Great Wall of China / HardRock superstar...but he's the worst kind of jock. It's funny how skateboarders spend so much time talking about how superior they are in all ways but still can't get past this issue. With all the anti-jock talk, it seems ironic how much of a boys club skateboarding can be.

I always wondered what Dave Carnie was referring to when he reviewed the first on video and said they left out the "josh swindell incident."

Also while we're on this subject, In the prank calls issue of big brother, they call Reynolds and ask himI(along with everyone they called) if they want a role in a movie, then tell him it involves a love scene with another man, Reynolds of course declines, and they ask if he knows any other pro skaters that might be interested in that role, he says actually he does, and Big Brother bleeped out the name he gives. I wonder who it was?

they have the right to live their lives how they see fit, just like you have the right to live your life the way you see fit, this is what makes america so great.   

i'm not down with gay people but i'm not going to judge them solely based on their sexual preference.  thats just as bad as judging someone based on the color of their skin.  if i were to cut them, they'd bleed red just like me, and if i ask them what they want from life, i bet their answer would be similar to mine...with the exception of me wanting to spend the rest of my life with some girl instead of some guy.
in the end they're people just like you and me, and as long as their sexual preference doesn't interfere with my life, i have no problem with them or anyone else for that matter.  everyone should have the right to live their life and enjoy themselves, everyone.

Sadly the one thing I've learnt about Skateboarding, is that just by skating, by being around skateboarding, or involved in it, doesn't make you a good or decent person. It makes you a skateboarder, and for that you have some good qualities surely, but overall it says nothing about your political opinion, sexuality, race issues, or whether or not you beat your wife, or are into jacking off over kiddie porn.

When will people stop lumping everyone together as one big-group? Acting like all gay people are the same, is like saying all skateboarders are the same. I have nothing in common with Johnny Handrail, or Mall Grip Timmy, or Tall Tee Tony. Nothing at all. And that's what makes the world awesome.

I would have to disagree with you. Skateboarding as a community seems to have a high concentration of homophobes. An illustrated example would be when Cory Duffel had his interview in Big Brother. People were up in arms over the fact that he called Stevie Williams a "trashy nigger". However, nobody said shit about his comments about killing homosexuals.

The only positive things towards gays I have ever read in a skateboard magazine were by Dave Carnie in Big Brother. Unfortunately they were in the same issue as Garret Barry's freak show of an interview the reinforced every negative stereo-type of gays. True, it was all meant in good fun, but I with all the content of that issue I am sure Carnie's words did nothing to change anyone's perception of gays. Gays as a negative comes up frequently in many skateboard mags.

I think it will be a long time before you see any current pro officially come out of the closet as their income is based entirely upon their image. This is the same image that is a big part of the purchasing decisions of the majority of people that by skateboards; kids in their early teens. It will be very rare that you will find someone in their early teen that would buy a pro model of an out gay pro out of fear of being labeled gay.

when i said "i'm not down with gay people" i didn't mean in the way you're taking it.  i just don't have any gay friends nor do i make a effort to become friends with gay people.  i'm a guy, so why would i befriend a gay dude?  in a way, i'd be leading them on in doing so, below is exactly how shit went down last time i hung out with my then girlfriend and some of her gay guy friends.   

i went to a concert with a girl i was dating.  after the show she wanted to meet up with her some of her gay male friends(yeah shes a fag hag as she liked to call herself).  no biggie, i was totally whatevs about because i'm banging the girl out and i'm pretty secure about my masculinity.  so we end up going to a gay bar for drinks as turns out one of her friends for whatever reason he didn't think we were together and thought i was gay and started talking to me.  he started saying the kind of shit guys usually say to get chicks into bed which made me uncomfortable to the point i wanted to leave.  when i told him i was straight, he got all pissed like,
"why did you waste my time by talking to me then?"
i was like "WTF man, you're friends with my date, i'm not going to be rude you and brush you off". 
he was all, "fine, whatever, but you didn't need to lead me on all ngiht",
i'm like "lead you on?,  by talking to you when you spoke to me?"

anyway after that little incident, i don't want to be a cock tease to any of gay men out there, hence i don't get down with gay people.
