Would you eat these?
« on: July 08, 2007, 08:47:29 AM »
Yes, they are real crickets, lightly dusted with flavor. They come in Nacho Cheese, Salt n' Vinegar, and the Sour Cream & Onion joints:

I'd eat them... I'm pretty sure they taste like peanuts, yet they feel like crisped rice. I've eaten grasshoppers (roasted and chocolate covered) and I think they're good. They're good for you, too.

What's the difference between crickets and grasshoppers? Is there a difference?

And where did you try these delicious snacks, may I ask?

I don't know the difference in taste, I just know that crickets are shorter and fatter, while grasshoppers are skinny and long. I imagine they taste the same though.

Food grade bugs are pretty easy to find here... there's a place called Fluker Farms (in Fluker, Louisiana) that specializes in bugs and they sell stuff all over the state.

Outside of grasshoppers and crickets, I don't think they sell anything else that's too weird... but if you want to experiment with some culinary oddities, check this out:
http://www.thailandunique.com/

Click on the "edible insects" link... canned bamboo worms, pregnant crickets, scorpions, etc etc. They also sell wine, whiskey, and vodka with snakes, scorpions, and seahorses floating in 'em. Crazy shit.

That website is so weird. I think there are some things that are better left undone...like seahorse whiskey. What´s the point?

Probably not because my society has taught me that that sort of food is disgusting since I have been a child, though this is not uncommon for most countries. It is similar to how some areas in America eat crawfish (which are fantastic). In some Central American countries (even Mexico, I believe), crickets and grasshoppers are sold in large quantities like crawfish and shrimp.

May I ask is Fluker, LA pronounced like "Flooker" or like "Fucker" with an L thrown in? Either way what a funny town name.

It sounds like "Flooker." It sounds like something that belongs in a Dr. Suess book.
