Get a white t, some clothing dye and a bunch of elastic bands. Fill up a bowl or something with water and the dye enough  so the shirt will be totaly submerged. Squeeze the shirt into a wrinkled little ball, the more surface area you leave the more the shirt will be colored, and then wrap a bunch of elastic bands around it (look on google to find different ways of folding and tying the shirt for different designs). Leave the ball in the dye for however long it says on the package for the dye, probly like half an hour. Then take it out and squeeze/rinse the shirt with water until the water coming out is clear. Watch out for dye coming out in the wash.

1. quit your job
2. find a t-shirt from any lost and found
3. actually fuck the last step, find a burlap sack...or anything similar to this texture
4. take the elastics from the bottom of your dread locks and knot them around said burlap
5. soak the burlap in a sink/basin filled with pastels, be sure to use colors that match your personality....tie dye shirts are a collaboration of life and express your uniqueness
6. take the knots out and put the elastics back in your hair
7. while your waiting for your shirt to dry, keep in mind that vinyl drips are a solid time killer
8. realize that you posted on a skateboard forum asking how to make tie dye shirts

Is it really out of hand already? I know a few companies like Stereo were doing it, but I haven't really seen that many others. I was never a big fan of it to begin with, but I like the ones where the shirt only has one color of dye on it though.

worrying about not doing something because too many people do is just as bad as the people who do it because it's the trend.
Like what you want, don't worry about the rest.
and in the grand scheme of things i barely see anyone around wearing tie dye.
so claiming it as "blowing up" is more than an exaggeration.

its a lot of fun actually and youll get an individual t everytime, youll have to experiment a little, dont buy the cheapest clothing colors
because it will wash out and make sure to tie those elastic straps (shoelaces work fine, should not be purely cotton though) tight, i suggest 20 to 30 minutes of leaving them in the color bath, then wash them seperately for the first time
