I really have only the most limited knowledge of law, but how does age play into crimes like this?
Like, the law would be more lenient with me if I was caught stealing a physical item, right?
But what happens when it's more of a gray area like this?

I remember reading a really good interview with Jeff Tweedy I think it was, where he talked about how he didn't think it should be a crime to download music, since, unlike if you were stealing a loaf of bread, it steal exists after you've taken it.

my ratio was starting to go up, what a god damn bummer.

Really? I definitely haven't uploaded that many albums. I have got a bunch of software though. Wonder what their policy on that is.

I never uploaded anything, but I seeded about 30 gigs of music. Anybody know about that?

Fuck, what are we all going to do for music? I can't go back to waiting a week for a low quality rip.

It's even worse since we're so close to Christmas time and the three or so weeks they let you download all you want without it effecting your ratio.

I don't know how true that thing about uploading 50 albums is, but when I read it I interpreted as meaning if you like, had a ratio of over 1.00 for more than 50 albums. That could be way off, and the 50 album thing might even be true.

And as for other sites, is indietorrents any good?

It's even worse since we're so close to Christmas time and the three or so weeks they let you download all you want without it effecting your ratio.

And fuck! I didn't even know that existed.

i only used oink as like a last resort, if i couldn't find the album anywhere else.  oh well.  there will be more sites exactly like this soon enough anyway.

I'm reading a bunch of articles on google news, and I don't see anything about this 50 albums thing, so I think it just might have been a rumor. It also sounds very arbitrary, and if they were to do something like that it would probably have more to do with gigs uploaded, not albums, since they could vary so much. But the RIAA and the like are fucked, so doing something totally illogical isn't out of the question.
From what I've read it sounds like people that donated may have a higher risk of being prosecuted, since they have financial records and stuff they could trace back to them.

I would STRONGLY suggest using a 15+ pass secure delete program and a zero fill using a USB thumbdrive with a bootable image(war drive)on whatever hard drives you have...The sucky thing about private trackers is that they do log traffic :'(

A video of the raid.

I love how the police don't even know what they're talking about, saying that there's a subscription fee and everything.

It's even better than it sounds. They didn't keep track of what you downloaded but they did keep track of what you uploaded. My ratio went up to 4.2 or something.

I'm gonna go cry now  :'(

If I get fined cause of this I'm making my brother pay some. Probably half the albums I downloaded off there were ones I did cause he asked me to, and I'll be damned if I have to spend all my college money because he needed to hear the new Dashboard Confessional.

Seriously. Yeah, no longer will people be forced to have access to high quality versions of music that they otherwise would have no ways of obtaining. Truly a great day for humanity.

I sat and watched a friend go out and buy $300 in trance CD's. Seriously. Within a few months, she had gone in debt, and had to move back to her hometown and live with her parents.

CD buyers have it rough too, man.

The question of what you, or I, will download versus what you, or I will go out and buy, must be raised. IE Joy Division. I won't buy a Joy Division CD. I'll download that shit. Why? Because Rhino records see's the money, not one of the ex members see any. However, when, say, a new Ghostface CD comes out, I'll but it.

And sorry bout ya friend. But damn, who would buy $1.00 worth of Trance CD's?

If I could buy a $10 flash drive of MP3's, I would. Instead, I'm being offered the $20 outdated technology of the Compact Disc.

This EXACTLY like the porn industry demanding we buy porn with blonde girls, with 90s bush trim, and cartoonish sized boobs, terribly acting for 88% of the movie.

Instead, we choose the opposite done by normal proportioned amateurs on the internet.

not exactly, you can still buy the porn featuring normal proportioned amatuers on the internet.  not that i would, i download almost all of my porn.  in my somewhat idealistic view, art should cost however monetary value you feel it has.

there's no point in erasing hard drives etc, since that won't change all the details they would've obtained by taking over the site. they have all our IP adresses and logs of downloads, but you're kidding yourself if you think they're going to place charges when there are around 180,000 users.

really depressing news though. leaks probaly won't turn up as early for a while, plus all those awesome users who ripped rare vinyl and shit are now gone.

This is the funny part of it all.

The IFPI forgot to renew their domain name, and someone bought it and gave ownership to the guys at The Pirate Bay.

http://ifpi.com/ifpi/   <----- THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO ABOUT THIS!!! MUAHAHAHAHA!!!!

The IFPI decides to take down Oink.

The moderator who got arrested is now released, but the defacement of their server is deemed technically illegal. You can shut a site down, but not leave propaganda as a replacement.

Nowhere, do you ever see a grow-op getting raided and a note on the door of the house saying, "We've arrested your dealer, and will find the rest of you pot smokers and you will all go to jail because we have your phone numbers!"

The BBC report that aired was basically the prime example of how the UK will handle this case. They reported people paying for subscriptions, uploading the music to a site, and used the old Napster as broll. The suit is going to have so many holes about knowledge of P2P, it will just be thrown in the trash.

I wouldn't worry the least bit. Nobody's going to be sued, because they don't even know what they're going to sue for. Personally, I think it's hilarious they're treating file sharing like it was worse than child porn. Such great priorities we have in this world nowadays.
