Xbox 360 File Sharing
« on: December 06, 2007, 06:05:48 PM »
My computer's getting kind of old, and I'd like to start backing up some files and videos so that I don't lose it all. Rather than buy an external hard drive, I figured since I have more than enough space left on my Xbox, I'd store it all on there, but I just can't get it to connect.

To get on xbox live, I'd usually just unplug my computer from the modem and run a wire from my modem to my xbox. When I try to do that with file sharing, it can't connect to the computer. When I run the wire from the xbox to my computer, it can't find an IP address.

So my question is, do I need to buy a router or something to get this to work, or is there something I'm not seeing?

(sorry if this is dumb, I'm absolutely regular when it comes to technology)

I dont know how you would go about file sharing, but to keep both the xbox and your computer connected to the internet I use a router.

You need a router to share over the xbox.

not too expensive actually, depends on the amount of storage space you want....

get an external hard disk, its a good investment.....

Get a cheap $20 Netgear router. One that won't blow out from too many packets streaming.

I always suggest to get the internet drive for video streaming, to keep a direct connection, and to avoid streaming cut-offs and lags.

There's also wireless streaming, but it tends to cut-off as well. Last thing you wanna do is have to reset your xbox when you're half way into beating off to an Andy San Dimas porno, while laying on the couch.

wireless doesnt always disconnect, depends on your router.  Mine is 5 years old and the connection to my laptop constantly flickers.  So if you can, direct connection is the way to go, its way faster anyway....

So I borrowed a router from a friend, but I still can't figure this out. Any tips on what wires go where/programs I may need?

The new xbox 360 firmware should be updated. To set file sharing, right click the folder you want, select sharing, and click on ""Share this folder" You may have to set permissions, etc after that.

From there, it's up to the 360 configurations.

Actually, I'm partially drunk and am merely guessing, in comparison to my xbox 1 with media center.
