there's just something about old skools that make you want to make them last longer.

All those slating the guys saying they are great but fall apart.

Isnt it obvious you need to glue EVERY shoe ever a bit to add some protection!?
Iv been skatin ten years......I have had every brand and every shoe falls apart after a while because i do alot of flips and flip grinds/slides.

OBVIOUSLY. when these guys are saying they are the best ever but they need glue, they are saying they are so well rounded and perfect board feel. just add some extra protection like you normally would.

I know everyone has their preferences but if we're talking pure PERFORMANCE here then these shoes aren't all that. Well rounded? try skating a gap or catching air on tranny with those things & tell me how "well rounded" they are. Here's what my P-Rod 7's look like after a full month of hard skating. I only missed 3-4 days tops due to bad weather or minor injury and when I did skate it was usually 2-3 hours minimum, often times even more. I put these things through their rounds and they still have at least a week or 2 left, only just recently starting to show major wear. No super glue or anything, only new laces i finally ripped the stock ones after the beginning of the 3rd week. I have a pair of Reynolds that're just as durable. not every shoe needs a bunch of pampering in order to last more than 2 weeks. their skate shoes man, shit should ALREADY be pretty damn durable.

i can see both sides.  Will is totally right that "skate shoes" should be durable without any required modifications.  But at the same time, there's just something about old skools that make you want to make them last longer.

my most recent creation was taking a small amount of suede from some dead adi-ease and cut it in the shape of the side panel, then shaved out the stock insole and added an OG adidas insole (from when they were ok). I've skated these on and off for months and will continue to do so when the mood strikes.

Off topic, but i've seen you skate a fair share of adidas, and i think your from SF right? Anyway, i just got back from SF and had a weird feeling i saw you skating that street with all the black ledges/DIY quarter-pipe. Call it a 6th sense, but i thought i'd ask.

I usually skate the Busenitz or other Adidas cupsole shoes. These are my first ADV, so far they are good.

Are you talking about the ledges on waller by haight? I havent been there for a while. Forgot when I was there last.

How far is the liquor store nearest skatepark with transition?

2-3 miles...and by "on and off" I mean I'll rotate them in and skate in them for an hour or so maybe once every other month or so, and really only when I'm planning on sticking to the transition area of the park...

so yeah, old skools are great, but they are crap for durable...also, you're lucky to even get a pair that doesnt have some manufacturing defect anymore.

man, how can I be so psyched on a shoe that is so terrible...oh, because it's also so good.

it's not logical.

Breaking in the Chimas. These are the first Vans I've had since the SPVs. They're really nice, but it makes me sad that everything "revolutionary" about the shoe was already done with the Es Edgar years ago. I went a half size down.

Was so bummed when I cancelled my order on the blue pair but after going through the gray ones in under 10hrs, I couldn't justify another pair unless they were the suede ones

The fuck??

The gray canvas does seem like a lighter material than the blues, but even through the rubber? I was looking forward to skating these after my Gonz pros. (speaking of weak-ass shoes, the soles are balding quick. Not as badly as the Busenitz vulcs, but not nearly as durable as the Adi-ease)

Yup :(  Through the canvas in a few hours.  Was bummed but expected that.  Then the next time I skated the rubber seemed like it was doing good.  Then the next one ... oh there's my sock :(

Well that's incredibly disappointing. Did they stretch out at all? Turns out my right foot is just a tad too snug, even after wearing for two days. Nothing I can't deal with, but my "true" size was wayyyy too loose to feel comfortable for skating. They feel great without socks though. Looks like Chima took some notes from Janoski.

Yeah, they gave widthwise a bit.  Mine were tight at first and where the stitching was kinda sucked but now I wear them around and they are comfy.  I bought my normal size though.  But yeah, I was super disappointed!  I really wanted to like them and try supporting a more skate oriented company and have been trying all of the "core" brands lately but honestly I think I'm just going to keep skating Busenitz's.  They are comfy as fuck and I've never had major issues with them.  So I guess I suck and am ruining skateboarding.  I do buy from smaller shops/board companies though, hopefully that will offset my big company shoe purchases. ;)  And Busenitz kills it so fuck it

Shoe/sole felt stiff when I got them, but skating them for the day it got broken in.

I don't know about the Silas 2, never had them... yet.

been skating them for a month, sole is in great shape and the suede is getting thin where expected.
put in Remand/Chico Brenes insoles and the match up is perfect. my old knees and fat ass aren't a great match up but i can have fun.

im currently skating these. they are probably the lightest lakai i've ever put on my feet, feel very thin (yet cushiony) and low to the ground for a cupsole which i'm really liking. to me they feel exactly like the first chris cole shoe on dc but with a thinner instep and a longer toe box (both are changes i prefer). would definitely recommend and am very pleased with this shoe.

no.  the front half of the ADV is flexible after a couple sessions, but the back half of the shoe stays pretty stiff, at least compared to the Silas 2 which have a full flex sole.

as a reference, the KA-II is more flexible than the Silas 2.

I am having a hard time deciding between another pair of Rayado/Silas or a pair of Silas 2s.

I've had the Rayado's and I love them. I think they're a great shoe. I haven't tried the Silas 2 yet but definitely dig the looks of it and it felt good when I tried it on in the shop.

havent skated the Rayados...but the Silas 2 were good.  Was not as into them as the ADV, but they are a good hybrid of vulc/cup.  flexible/thin were you need it and padded where you need it.  They leaned just a little more towards the bulky side for my tastes...but I really like thin shoes.  I'd say comparable to the original run of campus vulcs, but with a lil more tech features.

Great info Art, I appreciate it. I did have a pair of the original run of Campus vulcs so I understand the comparison completely. That helps. I am like you, I prefer thin shoes overall - even with mids - so even a little bit of padding makes a shoe seem thick to me. Now that you mentioned that, I do remember the Silas 2 feeling a little thick around the collar area.

OK, now I am feeling like a full-on shoe whore. Specifically I like trying out any Mids I can. I did have the Toki. I posted about them in this thread back in June....

I know how much everyone is (not) a fan of Nike here on Slap but I'm pretty happy with the Nike Toki Mid. I prefer a thin mid, previous shoes have been iPath West Wing for example. I skated in iPath Reed Mid and DVS Huf 3 Mid for years before I realized the bulky, thick padding just wasn't necessary in a mid cut shoe. Really you don't need much for lateral support. The cut of the shoe is sort of all the inherent protection you need.

It's a very similar all around die pattern to the Janoski, just not quite as thin. The Toki have a nice amount of padding around the collar.

glad it's helpful. ? felt i led some dooods astray with my initial thoughts on the Marcs, which were good but not great. ? gonna try not to get ahead of myself with recommending a shoe until having really skated them for a bit. ?

i did skate the silas 2 for a bit though, so yeah, that is exactly where they were too bulky. ? the board feel was good, but the rest of the shoe was the problem. ?

i just tore through my ADVs (after skating them for most of the summer) and just skated the KA-IIs for the first time last night...so good...the shoe is extra flexible and reminds me of a more substantial Rowley SPV.  Having never skated Lunarlon before, it took a second to get used to my feet being so comfortable.

Was thinking about getting some old skools but worried about lack of padding and impact support. Got these instead and I'm so glad I did. The padding is amazing but they have great board feel.
