Now is a good time to build a PC (anything beat COVID and mining days), even better if you source for used parts. Hell you can do a Ryzen APU build and get very respectable performance for esports titles and even some AAA games.

And ITX builds are the best, less desk space and most case manufacturers have accommodated builds for longer GPUs, though you will still need to deal with ITX tax. With @Abyss1 build you can go with go with 32GB of RAM and use the leftover money for a 1080p monitor, keyboard and mouse.

Or if you're feeling extra thrifty you can pick up a used Dell / Lenovo tower PC for cheap on eBay (depreciated corporate equipment), upgrade the RAM and slap in a 1060 and you're up and running.

Went to Best Buy tonight and got some sticker shock.

Based on your recommendations (Ryzen 7 Series processor/32 GB RAM) the least expensive unit I saw was IBuyPower and the build quality was unimpressive to say the least. I would not buy something like that to save some coin.

Of all the units I looked at I thought the Lenovo Legion looked the best for the price. The plastic used was of good quality and the fit and finish was top notch.

So, do we think that this is a gaming system that could last a young man from 12-16? I feel like he could use this system to learn what he wants to do when he decides to build his own system. He seems most impressed by being able to see inside the system and I don’t know that he knows or cares much about the guts. Again, he is mostly into Fortnight and does not play first person shooter games.

Also, what determines frames per second and what is a good amount to look for to prevent lag?

Another detail is that he has to access Fortnight from a server because his computer does not have Microsoft so maybe just having Windows on a computer improve the lag.

Thanks again you and @Abyss1

I am unfamiliar with technology items so the help has saved me hours of sleuthing.

Keep in mind the case does nothing for you, and they can be easily swapped. What's on the inside is what matters. The quality and appearance of the plastics used does not effect the user experience or performance. What looks the best is in no way a correlation to what performs the best.

Im gonna disagree, as housing is very important if your building your own PC.   You want to get a case that will work for the components you want to install and you want to be able to provide good balanced air flow in and out of the case.   I see many cases with exhaust only or have fans that cut off fresh air supply so the cpu and the gpu get hotter than needed.   (Also not yet on board with water cooling and so I always go with air cooling)

Sure, but functionality and looks are two different things, and they weren't complaining about the functionality of those cases, just that they didn't look good

@GardenSkater77 did you end up picking a PC up for your son yet? Amazon Prime day is coming up with solid deals online and in-store at Microcenter and Best Buy. Saw a couple of Acer Nitro laptops with mid range specs for under $800 that would be good for your son.

r/buildapcsales is the place to look for good sales - storage (SSDs) are still pricey, pre-built PCs, laptops and monitors have some good deals going on at the moment.

Just picked up this unit at B&H. It’s a major independent shop in NYC. I can take the train into NYC if I had to return. They give 30 days return. This was the best price I’ve seen by more than $100 USD. Thanks for your help and interest. And others who helped me.

Hope your son enjoys it, a cheap and big quality of life upgrade will be 32GB of DDR5 RAM (2 x 16gb) to replace 8GB (2 x 4GB) he has currently. Web browsers like Chrome eat up lot of memory and can make the PC feel sluggish prematurely. RAM prices have dropped substantially in recent years and he'll get loads of value for under a $100, or just wait till Xmas or Black Friday.

Went on a little nostalgia trip this past weekend and played Little Big Adventure 2. It's a quirky little platformer/adventure/puzzle game made by a French company. The only reason I know this exists is thanks to my grandma sending me the game from Poland when I was a kid, the soundtrack, characters and story are so charming. Had no clue the first one was being remade so that's gonna be cool to look out for.

I think its good just on the CPU and GPU,  I like the RTX3050 GPU, i have the smaller 6gb version, but some youtube gamers have been calling it the baseline for decent and affordable GPUs.

Uninstall all the Lenovo bloatware and re-install a fresh windows copy with nothing but windows.  If you need directions see below. This free's up a lot of memory so your son can play games faster.  I accidently bought a laptop with only 8gb of ram and its crazy how using the internet and windows uses up 60-70% my 8Gb memory.

If your son wants to get into the engineering, you can possibly reward next with upgraded cpu cooler fan or better case fans...Im not the biggest RGB guy and its a scam when the try to upsell item with them.    Also when GPUs drop in prices next year, maybe a kick ass GPU that game in 1440 or 4k with more frame rates

F-ing A, I loved that game as a kid! The physics was always wonky, the enemies could frame trap you till death, touching water means death and it was so unintuitive. But the world building and dialog is top notch. You felt like a jedi when you finally got the sword (after the stupid ball) and could tear anything apart!

Me and my friend stumbled on this as kids and knew it by Twinsen's Odyssey which was the American titling and we were so mesmerized by it, it just felt so foreign to every other game I'd seen

I don't love the visual style of the remake but I'd be down to play it again with some quality of life features

Doom II is an easter egg in Doom Eternal. Holy shit, it is so much fun.

Doom Eternal was pretty damn fun too. I need to collect all the secrets (I have like 10 more to go) and then I'm going to replay on Ultra-Violence.

Currently playing through Wolfenstein 2 and there's a Wolfenstein 3D arcade machine in the main hub that has the full game. I forgot what insane fucking maze levels those early 90's shooters had.

After much deliberation I bought V Rising on PS5.

Im loving it so far despite it being a bit daunting with all it's systems- it was fine for the first 5/6 hours in terms of on boarding - but now I'm finding it's sometimes hard to know what you are supposed to do even with the objectives on.
For instance, my current objective is something like "Find a way to unlock iron melting", which on the surface may seem simple enough, but I've got things in the crafting menu locked - so I'm GUESSING that I just have to level up in some way or tackle some more mini bosses (V Blood).

The Castle base building is, for my money, the highlight of the game. I've not played a lot of isometric arpgs (like Hades and Diablo) but this is quickly becoming a favourite.
It's a pretty beautiful world, and is very easy to get the hang of the controls - the building controls being a particularly easy to grasp highlight imo. Out of my 10 hours so far I've probably spent about 3 of that just fiddling with my castle and I've only gotten a small amount of the customization and building options.

There are a few different ways to play (Solo private server, PvP, PvE) and I basically don't play online multiplayer so I'm going Private server solo at the moment.
I'm thinking of starting a new save of online PvE if I can work out the key differences it will have compared to my current save.

£32 full price on PSN and feels like a perfect price for it, I haven't touched the DLCs as I'm waiting for any of it to be discounted.

Both have their charm - the original is classics 90s polygon aesthetic, the remake fits the whimsical stylings of the game. I remember my brother and I printed out the walkthrough on GameFAQs and passed it around the school bus to whoever was playing it at the time.

Beat Zelda: Skyward Sword HD for Switch on Monday. While nowhere near the best game in the series, I still loved every bit of it. Plus, the choice between motion controls and standard made it so much more enjoyable. Still hate the 1:1 motion controls and will never change my opinion.

Alan Wake 1 remaster was cheap on PSN so I’m on chapter 3 of that.

I tried it when I was younger and got bored of it immediately bc of combat.

Now I’m in for the long haul.

Anybody do the 2nd one?

Just beat Alien: Isolation, was always interested in this but somehow never got around to it. Really loved it except for the last few hours being a real slog... a ton of arbitrary running back and forth while they throw a ton of BS at you and you think it's about to end 5 times only to have to do another set of tasks and go back and forth across the station again. When it finally does end it's super abrupt and left on a cliffhanger. Still, fun game though.

I downloaded Steam recently out of boredom and quickly found a bunch of my favorite childhood PC games. Just beat the original 3DO Army Men game. That shit is insanely hard! I have no idea how 8 year old me was able to finish that game. Took me a few weekends to get through the entire thing.

Paper Mario 64 has consumed my free time for the past three or four days. Never got a chance to play it as a kid and I'm kind of glad I didn't play it back then. I wouldn't have understood it and probably would have had unwarranted hatred for it.
I'm usually pretty whatever on turn-based games, but the way they have the battles set up keeps me engaged and entertained.

Gotta always. I want people to investigate the things I make and find cool things related to. Somehow I keep getting gold and platinum rewards from sales of something? I never have money to buy cool shit I gotta win it.
