Thought about this guy we used to work with who spoke English, Spanish, but also "spoke" Japanese. Intrigued, we asked him to say some things in Japanese. After speaking to him a bit, it became clear he didn't actually know how to speak Japanese, but had memorized Japanese colloquialisms and proverbs. It'd be like if I claimed to speak English, but the only things I could say to people were like "Hey, you know the early bird gets the worm!" or "Hey Steve, an apple a day keeps the doctor away!"
