Italian horror film's have been my go to as of late.

Salo
El Topa
Holy Mountain
Maniac
Day of the Beast
Suspiria
Faust Italian movie not the Hollywood shit film.

I like fucked up movie's but I draw the line ___________ when it comes to torture horror film's, shit is garbage.
[close]

[close]
Torture Porn eg..... Serbian Film, Hostel, Saw, Descent
[close]

Torture porn?

You mean a movie where a group of fascist libertines round up young boys and girls and subject them to physical, mental, and sexual torture over the entire course of the movie? You mean a movie called Salo or the 120 Days of Sodom? Kinda like that?

Not sure if you are being intentionally thick or not. I really can't tell.
[close]
Okay we're on the same page of understanding and no I don't enjoy the rape murder and torture it plays out, however  comparing this movie to a modern horror movie the violence is so fake compared to modern movies, I'd gladly pick this movie more that an Saw or Hostel or any other recent movie.
[close]

Yeah as vile and depraved as Salo is... I wouldn't really consider it 'torture porn', compared to movies like Flowers of Flesh and Blood, August Underground or Serbian Film.  Salo does have some artistic merit (even Martin Scorcese is a fan!), although it's a movie I never ever, ever want to see again.  What's even crazier is the movie is TAMER than the book it's based on.

I actually watched that movie on a fucking date with this goth/industrial/'boyd rice fan' type-of-girl, it really fucked me up for a few days.
[close]

I'm not debating if Salo has artistic merit or not, it clearly does and is a very important film within Italian cinema. But I absolutely would call it a preface to those contemporary movies you listed.

Just as a Serbian Film or Hostel satirizes the modern elite class and depicts extreme violence and depravity to achieve its subtextual meaning, Salo too pushes forth the use of extreme violence to excoriate Italy's social system of the 70s. The authority figures in “Salo” are fascist officials whose regimen of humiliation seems motivated less by sexual desire than by the exercise of total power and control. In Hostel, an organization called the Elite Hunting Club allows wealthy people to pay to mutilate tourists as a direct exercise in total power and control.

Salo takes place in an art-film universe of country houses, modern art, chamber music and fine furniture. It's exploitation canvased as sentimentality that Pasolini sells to the audience perfectly. Pasolini’s premise acknowledges the perverse erotic appeal of fascism, but his main concern was the rise of consumer capitalism and its ability to reduce human bodies to commodities. In Hostel, people are quite literally being sold as commodities to the elite. Although Salo does not fit into the direct lineage of torture porns contemporary gory aesthetics and generalized Hollywood production treatment of the 2000s, it absolutely is a preface to the genre itself.

Yes, I do think that Salo has more artistic merit than Human Centapide or any of the Saw movies. But my argument is that they both share similar subtexts that deserve acknowledgment. Sorry for the essay, I love talking about cinema. Take care yo.
[close]
Yes we're are agreeing to agree just on subjective views, I have found movies especially those from the 70's a precursor to what you were saying about the upperclass.  Yes both are inherit with treating humans as commodities and one is quite tastefully done versus seedy underbelly of toilet scum.

For me when I watch a movie I want to feel something but I do not want to my film to exploit my worst fears either with gratuitous violence or sheer fucked up relatable real stuff that happens in this world more recently, ie Serbian film that movie was a piece of shit and anyone involved in it or those who enjoyed or had no problem with it's content should seriously have their head examined after watching it.  Nothing is appealing about it in fact that movies seriously has left me turned off from modern extreme horror movies in general, hence this discussion.

I like a good spooky movie or a slasher even a comedy horror such as Tucker and Dale vs. Evil is a great movie. As I get older the formula for those extreme horror movies gets stale and maybe I'm afraid of my own mortality and I empathize when real tragedy happens so in essence those subjects that dumb movies take lightly I sometimes have an issue with it.
[close]

Read my point about exploitation disguised as high-art/sentimentality again. The film was never meant to be tasteful, but if it hides behind a layer of art-house archetypes then it can be disguised as such. Just because the film got a Criterion release doesn't make it any less a grotesque exploitation film. I swear if Cannibal Holocaust got a Criterion release then people would consider that high art and less pedestrian as well. There is absolutely nothing tasteful about Salo, Nazi's making children eat literal shit and slicing their eyes open is anything but tasteful. Does Salo have artistic merit though? Yes, but tasteful it is not.

I agree with you about A Serbian Film, its shocksploitation done to the absolute highest degree. You aren't going to find many people who enjoy the movie just like you aren't going to find many people who "enjoy" Salo.

You say you empathize when real tragedy happens but fascism and Nazism was, and still is, a very real tragedy that happened and continues to unfold to this day. That to me is why I prefer Salo over the aforementioned torture porn movies that have been brought up. To me, over the top gore from corny horror productions is less of a real tragedy and more of a commentary about the state of humanity that borrows heavily from the body horror subgenre to get its point across. You say you don't want graphic over the top violence yet your profile pic is someone getting a shotgun blast to the face? (please change that btw lol). I'm not trying to come after you and pick you apart I'm just trying to understand where you are coming from when it comes to tasteful violence vs. where it crosses the line.

Good discussion, its an interesting topic for sure. Have a good day dude!
[close]
okay I get your points on several things, and sadly no way the avatar I have is from that cheesy horror movie Maniac with Tom Savini that movie was creepy in all the right ways.

Now a very unsettling movie that leaves you with a bad taste in your mouth is Henry portrait of a serial killer. That was a fucked up one that I have nightmares to this day.

Luckily I saw it on the big screen before COVID shut down cinemas. Such an amazing and twisted film.

I just saw Tenet in theaters with a homie last night. We were two of about six people in our entire theater. Surreal.

I’ve got a few really minor gripes, specifically the sound mixing (a lot of the dialog is buried by the score), but it’s an undeniably masterful work that at times seems impossible. The last big set piece in the film is absolutely mind blowing, and the twists and little payoffs are incredibly satisfying. Its one of those movie experiences where as soon as we walked outside we wanted to buy another ticket and get back on the ride.

I’m definitely a Nolan fanboy though. If you’re going to see one movie before the world ends, it should be this.

Whenever a character was wearing a gas mask it kinda had the same issues I found with the "Bane" audio in Dark Knight Rises.

I need to re-watch as I don't remember most of it, only thing is I kinda remember the end so I know midway I'll shout "Oh I remember!" and lose interest.

Started the new Jumanji, it's pretty good. As a videogame fan it's cool to see the videogame elements.

I did!  Interesting departure for Kaufman, while still feeling like it's sort of "in his world".  Creepy, tense, and funny at times.  Jesse Plemans and Toni Collette were especially great.

I watched The Devil All The Time and really enjoyed it.  In some ways, it seemed like a better executed The Place Beyond the Pines.  Really gritty commentary on religion, war, and righteousness.

I thought The Devil All The Time was just okay overall, and RPatz didn't really pull off his character.

I'm really interested to check out some stuff from the author who wrote the book it was based on though. I downloaded his book The Heavenly Table, gonna start reading it soon.

I am watching Train To Bhuton right now. It's a Korean zombie movie but so far, it's pretty good but I haven't finished it all. It's shot really well and visually it looks great. So far it's a typical zombie flick but it is mostly contained in a train. Watch the trailer below and these zombies are the type that run like mother fuckers.

I'm a huge fan of Kaufman, thank you for bringing up his latest film! Like with any of his films, it requires multiple viewings to really tie together the subtle surrealist nuances buried within the narrative. So I am going to have to watch this one again, especially since the jarring viewing experience was a Kaufmanesque fever dream of fuckery. It definitely made it tricky to identify the overarching connections within the film.

I don't think this is for someone watching their first Kaufman film and I can see people who don't expect the experimental and absurdist qualities of his films to feel alienated by this one especially. That said, I'm Thinking of Ending Things might be the most impressive visual commentary on the concept of memories entwined with self-identity that I have ever seen. It was unstable, melancholic, boundless, and doesn't waste a single moment to compromise its fractured structure. It's cathartic in the sense that it reveals our humanity like with all of Kaufman films (including the ones he didn't direct) yet it's also a reveal of our neurotic self-delusions as well. I can also see the film being a first-person account of the destruction of the mind through dementia.

For people who want to watch something that's completely offbeat, watch this. The performances are awesome and it commands your attention throughout. There are a few long scenes in the movie that involves sitting in a car for long periods of time that may be offputting but spend that time really trying to understand the unspoken subtext within those scenes. When it clicks, you'll have an "oh shit" moment, I promise.

Also if you are interested Kaufman just released his first novel titled Antkind. Haven't read it yet but will pick it up soon. :)
