Rented Titane on Amazon Prime.  I've been obsessed with seeing this movie since my IG algorithm put it on my radar.

The films is totally different than some expectations set by the trailer.  Easily the craziest first 30 minutes of a film I've seen in a long time, and I was pleasantly surprised by the tender tone this film took later on.

Any Dune viewers have their minds totally hijacked by the super metal sardaukar sequence with the throat singing and the blood sluices? Because i haven't been able to stop thinking about it all weekend

Yeah that shit was just too cool. Didn't really notice the first watch that those people were crucified upside down for some blood letting shit. 2nd and 3rd watch I was ready to soak up that whole bizarre world. Watching on HBO you can rewind all you want too

You gotta check it in theaters. Hearing that throat singing with a massive sound system was mind blowing

As a casual fan of Dune and after watching it today I had a couple moments to share that were memorable.

During the Gom Jabbar test for humanity , I felt moved as Paul transitioned from suffering into acceptance.

That transition was mysteriously powerful.
The Bene Gesserit Reverend Mother exclaims “enough!” ... giving the impression she was being challenged to a point of surrender. Ironic since she was subjecting Paul to a form of torture.

The soundtrack and especially the elements of percussion where the instruments sound like bassy vibrating tubes was wonderful.

The ‘thopter’s design were ingenious.
They resemble dragonflys which according to this video have a unique anatomy that allows a high degree of mobility

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=iJi61NAIsjs

and as far as my mom and I could tell, no worms were harmed in the making of this film.

I couldn't get into Dune at all. I spent 50 minutes watching it before finally turning it off. I found it to be boring. Reviews of it seem good though.

Also whenever they used "The Voice" in theaters it just fucking rips through your seat like they're using it on you. This is definitely one of those rare movies I think absolutely needs to be seen on the big screen. Although a capable home system would probably work well

I'm going to try and see it in the theater on Sunday. Did anyone notice the soundtrack had an homage ( I think ) to the Lynch Dune soundtrack about 2 hours in?

Who's the first actor shown on screen in Gleaming the Cube?

Is it Rodney Mullen doing freestyle?

Also, I go long periods of time without watching anything, then go on a bit of a spree. I’ve watched one movie a day since Thursday.

Three Elliot Gould movies:

“MASH”—I’ve been a big fan of the TV series since I was kid. I’ve never watched the movie before, despite being a big Robert Altman fan (see next movie). I liked it, but I missed the heart that’s in the series. Clearly an anti-Vietnam/Military film, but I think it misses the toll that that environment takes on the people in it. Make sense, at the point it was released there was a lot of focus on the war and the people responsible for dragging it on, not as much on what the war was doing to the people who were told to do the dirty work—it would take a few years and movies like “Tracks,” “Apocalypse Now,” and “Deerhunter” to get deeper into that stuff—PTSD, etc. I think the tv series benefits from coming a little farther down the line.

“The Long Goodbye”—This movie is incredible. I didn’t notice anything new on this re-watch because it’s pretty much burned into my brain. Marty Augustine breaking the Coke bottle still freaks me out more than anything I’ve seen in any mainstream Hollywood movie. Brutal.

“Busting”—This was interesting to watch after “The Long Goodbye.” Cool to see Gould spend the whole movie playing a character  slowing  realizing that he is out of step with the times vs. his character only realizing that at the end of “The Long Goodbye.” Also, a month or so ago I watched re-watched “Hardcore.” In that movie George C. Scott’s charter goes into a porno shop and the cashier tells him that he has to pay $.50 to browse, and that that money is a deposit on a purchase. It made me wonder if that was standard practice in the 1970s. It certainly wasn’t by the time I went to my first porno shop. In “Busting” the cashier make Gould’s character pay the same price to browse and says it’s a deposit on a purchase. Maybe it was real.

And “Scream”

I went to see it with my 16-year-old daughter. For a kid her age, she’s fairly well versed in older horror movies, but has always refused to watch any made after the 50s (with the exception of “Gremlins”) because they are “too scary.” This was her first slasher movie and her first “modern” horror movie. We saw it in a theater. The first time we’ve been in one since COVID hit.

I love this movie. I have loved it since seeing it when it came out, and as an (at that time) huge horror/slasher fan, I saw more of myself in it and its sensibility than I do in any other horror/slasher movies (“Student Bodies” being an exception). This was the most enjoyable viewing of it I’ve ever had, and that’s because of my daughter. Watching her have the experience of watching this kid of movie for the first time was pretty incredible. Seeing her go from being terrified by the first phone call to laughing when Kenny fell off the news van and smashed the fence was an amazing ride. I’m super-stoked that she had a great experience, conquered a fear, and found something new to enjoy. I was hyped that she was able to find so much joy in allowing herself to get lost in the movie. It’s a kind of joy that i can’t really experience at the movies because I tend to be too analytical (the reason why this movie is and has been so appealing to me).

Now she wants to watch all the sequels, which I’m fine with. But we’re not starting today—which is what she wants.

I watched Dune last night and really liked it.
I was a little sceptical at first because I didn’t much care for Villeneuve’s Blade Runner

Only thing that bothers me is I wish they’d take more risks in casting these films.
Wonder if they do it to save time because you pretty much know the character when you see it’s Momoa, Brolin or Bardem?

They are spending hundreds of millions.
they probably want to make sure they have dependable actors who the public actually is excited to see.

(That being said while I want to like mamoa, he has never been in a movie I liked)

Also for anyone who's watched dune: does it feel like an adult movie kids can watch or is it like a kids movie they are trying to make a bit darker for adults? Or not for kids at all?

It’s just sloppy, playing it safe and boring seeing the same faces in similar roles.

Goddamnit. Saw Dune in the theater Saturday and was rocking a piss during that scene so just caught the end of it. I really enjoyed it. Visual and aural treat that required just enough presence to suck me in and forget a pretty shit day.

It sort of feels to me as though the viewer is expected to know a bit about the Dune-iverse or have a powerful handheld device that can give background to fill in the blanks. Which makes me wonder 2 things: Have the interwebs and dork culture changed how movies are made? (i.e. made for nerds that know the material inside and out and/or likely to be viewed at home with a smart phone at hand) II. Are we so used to either knowing the “universe” before hand or loads of exposition that a lack of either is uncomfortable? I feel we take for granted the number of things that weren’t explained in Star Wars in 1977.

Might take my nephew to go see it. He's only in 1st grade but we watch robocop, terminator, predator, aliens, the fly etc I'm not concerned about the content.
My concern is I'll fucking hate it. I can't get thru a lot of movies like justice league, fast and furious. I feel like they're made for adults whose brains don't work. (Not even trying to be a snob, I like a lot of other dumb shit)

I think a first grader would be bored to tears watching Dune. The film does a great job of breathing life into some pretty mundane space politics but I know adults who think it’s boring as fuck. I thought it was fantastic, to be clear.

Yeah thanks. I'm in a tricky situation he's young but really smart (everyone thinks their kids are smart but this kid is legit doing highschool work when he's 7 years old) so it's hard finding the balance between kid friendly but still interesting.

When I first saw ads for Dune, I also couldn't figure out if it was meant for teens since the main actor looked so young and it was PG-13, but I loved it. I agree that a first grader might be bored with the run time at 2:35 and the first hour is a little slow. As far as being too violent for a kid, it's got some potentially intense scenes, but if you've watched Terminator together, I don't think it's anything worse than that. Maybe he'll have a nightmare about getting swallowed up by a giant sand worm.

“Peeping Tom”

I haven’t seen this since I was a kid—that was a long-ass time ago. I didn’t remember much about it, other than it seeming to establish some of the tropes of slasher films and maybe being among the vanguard of “psycho next door” films as they took over “monster of the week” type films. When I last saw this, I didn’t know who Moira Shearer is, so it was cool to see her in this one—and of course they found a reason for her to dance. The colors are great. The sets are great. Carl is a total creep—and is a great role model for the kids incriminating themselves on TikTok. Fun to think about a time in which having every part of ones life documented seemed weird.

“Sunset Boulevard”

I don’t know how many times I’ve watched this. A lot. It was the last movie I saw in a theater before COVID. It’s my favorite movie. This time I really enjoyed watching Gloria Swanson’s performance and Buster Keatons (very short) performance. Hedda Hopper’s brief appearance was a brutal look at the celebrity media industry that struck me as being way worse than all the camera crews hanging around.

I watched all the Evil Deads a month or so back. The second one is still my favorite, but Army of Darkness is by far the funniest.

This one is really gross:
