Rewatched Gummo for the first time in a couple years last night. Still my favorite movie after all these watches.

This movie was really weird. Halfway through I had to tap my blunt out and take a walk because it made me feel so damn strange.

I could not get into this movie at all, fiest it's just fucking odd and I found Long's acting super annoying.

Re-watched Carlitos Way today for probably the first time since I brought it on VHS.

Don't know why I hadn't watched it sooner. A lot grimier and possibly even more stressful than Clouzot's Wages of Fear.
Yeah I've been meaning to watch this for years.

Pretty solid early Cronenberg movie, that feels weirdly relevant right now.

His son has a new movie out that's gotten some good reviews too:

Continuing with the Cronenberg theme here

I watched the Brood last night. It was pretty good. Not mind blowingly amazing, but a good movie for Cronenberg fans.

Took a dive into Kurosawa after only really having watched the Seven Samurai. Had to rip these through a pirate bay proxy but well worth the hassle. Both amazing movies and visually stunning:

High and Low is amazing. Ikiru is pretty amazing as well. I'm yet to find a Kurosawa movie that isn't amazing.

This skateboard movie surprisingly isn't beyond terrible. Not my favorite movie ever, but better than most skate movies.

rewatched children of men recently. Not a perfect movie but still, very well done and it's kind of interesting to watch 14 years after being made and see some of the fucked up parallels in it to today's society.

One of Caine's best roles in my opinion, also one of Hunnam's only non wooden performances.

Rewatched Le Haine for it's 25th anniversary.

I have it but haven't watched it yet. Worth the time? And yeah I agree with you about caine's best roles. Clive Owen is perfect for it IMO. Another awesome movie I've seen recently is Hostile's. Absolutely brutal flick and really made me respect the actors in it.

Minding the Gap is getting added to the Criterion collection.
Can't wait to watch those Tony Hawk special features.

Last weekend I finally watched Sorcerer. It was super good, but absolutely not the movie I was expecting based off the title.

Last night I rewatched Halloween III. Again, a really enjoyable movie, that is not at all what you'd be expecting.

Yea, I watched it a while back and again recently.
Much like you said before it seems somehow relevant now in 2020.
Owen is an odd one, he's done some incredible roles but recently seems to be slipping into B movie fare.

God what a beautiful cover, Criterion can do no wrong. I'm surprised Minding the Gap doesn't get mentioned that often around these parts other than when it was first released and during Oscar season when it was nominated. To me, it really is the best movie incorporating skateboarding and skate culture that has ever been released.

Although it's not implicitly about the physical act of skating, it's a commentary about how skate culture can serve as a place of escapism from problems of home life. Sometimes we feverously push not to get somewhere but to run away from something. And it works. Temporary or not, it works and is enough.

Bing rules. I think he used to post here at one point in time no?

I watched Prospect on Netflix last night and really liked it. Lower budget indie sci-fi done very well imo, plus Pedro Pascal is always good.
Look I'm not selling anything that doesn't have my jizz on it. I don't care how much is offered.

Let me know how you like it!  I'm 37, and some of the arrested development themes hit close to home, but I really loved it.

Yes! So glad to see Kelly Reichardt's work getting mentioned around these parts. She's one of my absolute favorite filmmakers currently out there and each of her films are minimalist, stoic, unfettering treasures. Her sparse environments, slow edits, lonesome characters, and static camera shots captures something so resonating and familiar about American culture. I understand if some would call her films too slow-paced for their tastes though. Also she nearly always leaves the viewer without a proper Hollywood ending which is honestly pretty funny and I love her for it. If you are in the mood for something slow-paced and serenely dreary, watch her stuff.

Although I wouldn't recommend this as ones first venture into Reichardt, here is one of her films Meeks Cutoff (2010) in its entirety about a wagon train facing difficulty on the Oregon Trail:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOBKgZl9GGo

But as for a starting point, I would recommend Wendy and Lucy (2008) or her most recent film First Cow (2019) which was distributed by A24.

agree with everything here--was introduced to this in an incredible film class way back as an undergrad, and have been a fan of Herzog and Kinski ever since...mind-blowing degrees of craziness and genius between the two...
