Just watched Grave of the Fireflies.  Another amazing Studio Ghibli film about two siblings struggling through WWII in Japan.  Not a happy movie but very good.

If you are in the mood for something similar Barefoot Gen (1987) is another WWII animated feature from Japan. Very grim and the big death scene is pretty disturbing on first watch.

I really like Aki Kaurismaki's movies, he's a director from Finland and a strange, funny person. Just watched Le Havre and Leningrad Cowboys.

you could probably watch this little interview and know if you want to see his movies or not.

Mortal Fucking Kombat. I also love how the techno theme song immediately makes me wanna get up and start doing living room karate on my wife.

Sound of Metal was solid. Felt a bit anxious at times with the sound editing but that added to the experience.

I watched "A Promising Young Woman" last night on TV and "Nomadland" tonight in theater.

Both were good, though I preferred the latter. "Nomadland" was gorgeous on the big screen and both Frances McDormand and David Strathairn delivered good performances.

"APYW" was a mindfuck but interesting, especially on the subject of consent and should perpatrators/enablers/bystanders be forgiven for past sexual misconduct.

I recommend both films.

Really enjoyed this movie, I think it would be one of the few movies that is better when watched with earbuds/headphones

frank millers sin city. probably the gnarliest in noir fiction -theyre well made i like the black and white comic style with shades seldomly thrown in. rewatched both (hartigans story got moved to the beginning but whatever) marvs the best

Definitely. That and Beethoven.

Always loved his appearances on talk shows too. There’s one he appeared on letterman with his “attorney”. No clue how he didn’t break. Dude knew how to work a bit.

Just watched eXistenZ per someone's suggestion, really trippy and is now lodged in my brain. Honestly watching this twice wasn't enough.

Apocalypse Now. Scarface used to be my favourite movie for years but then I finally bought an used apocalypse now dvd (I don’t have anything like netflix etc, just my good old faithful ps2), and goddamn. Had to watch it again the next day, just somehow that movie hit me different than anything else.

Check out “Heart of Darkness” if you haven’t seen it.  Great documentary about the making of Apocalypse Now, which is a legendary story.

Under The Skin.  Damn near flawless movie and the exact type of sci-fi/horror I love… slow, creepy, eerie and dark.  I love the science fiction genre even though I’m convinced there’s only about 5 good ones (Alien, The Thing, Blade Runner, Solaris, The Stalker).

Scarlet Johansson was great in it.

district 9 is a good one. in an alternate 1982 a mothership appears over johannesburg -a scifi retelling of the apartheid era where residents were forcefully relocated. themes of humanity and xenophobia. warlords. interspecies prostitution. greed and betrayal. transmutation. mercenaries. exosuits. cat food

don't know if that was my rec, but one of my favourite scifi and cronenberg films. mood doesn't sacrifice anything to plot and vice versa.

Watched Promising young woman the other night, some scenes were kinda gross to watch cause you know it happens so much in the world but yeah good movie. Hope it made the creeps out there feel cringey and think twice.
