Anyone in here running the Fujifilm X100v?

I’m looking at that or the Leica d lux 7.

Any input or other options in that class appreciated
[close]

The Fuji X100 series are excellent. I’ve used a slightly older model as a travel camera and as a backup to my full kit, I work as a photographer, several times with excellent results. Never used the Leica, but only obvious advantage I see is that the Leica has a zoom lens, while the Fuji is a fixed 35mm lens equivalent. I love that about the Fuji, but it really depends on your needs and style of shooting. Fuji is smallish, and durable, good colors and simple to set up and use.
[close]

Thanks! I’m 99% positive I’m going to grab the Fuji. I’ve been reading/watching a ton of reviews the last day or 2 and I’m pretty sure it’s the one. I don’t NEED the zoom and I feel the features of the Fuji are the better option. I especially like their film simulation. I don’t mind the fixed lens, I know that if I went with something like the X-Pro3 I would end up needing a bag for lenses. The X100 is small enough to fit into everyday life without having to do much extra.

It’s a great do it all/street camera. Zoom with your feet and have fun.

I have the OG x100. I haven’t kept up with what’s changed but I’m a fan of the system. Compact and well organized controls, physical shutter/aperture control, and just a very capable system that you can carry everywhere.

My only issue is slow AF but that’s more related to the age of the camera. I’m sure the newer ones are quick.

Yeah, spot on. OG X100 had pretty bad AF especially in low light. Newer ones are far better.

I have the X100V. Don't know how the older models perform but the new one is great so far. I oddly also have a Fuji XT3 with a 23mm f1.2 and I find the quality of the photos are better but it comes in that form factor. I will say the fun of Fujis to me is the film recipes you can add cause that is what makes the jpegs really turn out close to film. I recommend the camera anyways.

On a side note, the only thing I don't like are Fujis RAW files. I know you aren't supposed to use Lightroom and I think use Capture One but the files look like little worms that make up an image.

Hi all, hoping to get some thoughts on the technique behind this classic Spike Jonze photo of Jeremy Klein:

I've always assume that it was a long single exposure with a low powered flash burst for each frame/image of JK.

When I was looking at it tonight it struck me how solid each image of JK is. I would of expected him to be quite translucent? I assume it would be very easy to over expose if this was the method Spike used.

What are your thoughts on how this effect was achieved?

I'm interested in having a go at creating a similar imagine and thought it might be cool to discuss beforehand.

I would say you are right about the long exposure. Some flashes have a strobe function. You can set the number of flashes and the speed at which they fire.
I guess if your background doesnt have any features, dark sky etc., then nothing will happen to the film until the skater goes over it and gets flashed.

The other way to do it would be shooting a sequence multi exposure.  You do need a fancy camera though for that, and a bit of math to figure out your ambient light exposure, since your going to expose it as many times as you have frames in the sequence.

Probably just like you said, long exposure and flash. The reason there’s no “ghosting” is probably due to the power on the flash being on the higher side.

(Low iso and a higher fstop, f11 maybe).

Love the picture and always wanted to try it out, unfortunately I didn’t. There are a lot of classic skate pics that I love and have great techniques. Blabac is having many of those.

GR’s are a really nice camera, I can’t believe how functional it is for the size. You really have no excuse not to have it with you at all times.

My only fault is I find the 28mm lens to wide, but I did hear they’re coming out with a 40mm version of it after all these years which I’m excited for.

There was a 40mm GR Digital, which can be had for pretty cheap if you wanted to play with one.

I like the 28mm because I feel like it works better with snap focus, which is the draw of the camera to me.

So been going to Pier 7 here and there just to shoot some photos of skaters before it gets capped again. I saw Rob G was there with Rodrigo Peterson and Steve Nesser. Shot some stuff of mostly Rodrigo and met them after too when they saw me with the camera.

Obviously very Instagram type of photos with the long lens but I thought it was something different anyways.

These should be published somewhere. Absolutely awesome use of framing and symmetry.

Right on guys. It isn't your conventional skate photograph but I look at it like blending landscape photos with a hint of skating. I've always wanted to do a strobe photo of the same thing but with the bridge and sky slightly lit up. Hopefully I can do that one day.

^love a good point and shoot roll

I got a minolta afv with an electronic german voice telling me if the flash is ready or not, cool little camera. Unfortunately the on/off button was a plastic cover you had to take off and try not to lose, pretty terrible design
