thats a "crew" of kooks I always see around my neighborhood. they  come to skate spots and do their gay slides all over. just look at their pictures.

You know I bet skateboarders look exactly the same to the general public who doesn't skate, as these fixies do to you guys.

3 pages of this shit is ridiculous. Didn't Slap hash this out in '06?

The fashion and image of the whole deal is lame, but then again go to a skate park and talk to me about the fashion and image of 90% of the dudes there.

There's nothing inherantly stupid about the bicycle or the act of riding one. The common thread is the idiots wrapped up in the scene but that's pretty universal (ie. mountain biking, road racing, bmxing, rollerblading, surfing snowboarding, etc).

I commute 2 miles on a 1960's Bianchi fixed gear my little brother built. I don't have an outfit or wear a hat or do trix but I'm pretty stoked on the bike because I like antiques and am stoked that my little brother built it up. It's a good bike for my commute because it's flat and for 2 miles I don't need 10 speeds. And the fact that it's fixed means you've always got to be aware and you adapt and roll with punches just like when you're skating.

watch the video on that page.  maybe these kids just aren't that good but i don't see that there's much possibility for a full length fixed gear video.

Some of the bare bones raw fixies are rad, but most of the riders are kooks....

and most of the tricks remind me of cru from the movie rad freestylin with his girl at the big dance.

I'm not totally sure what a fixed gear bike is, but when I was 10 I had a bike that you had to pedal backwards to stop, and my first day with it I bombed a huge hill without knowing how to stop and flew off a wall at the bottom.  If that was a fixed gear, those things are pretty fucking fun.

thats a bike with a coaster brake. fixed gears have no freewheel, so you pedal the whole time.

i dont think anybody is hating on the bikes, but just the fact that in the past 2-3 years(depending on how slow your area is to catch on to trends) a bunch of people have started riding them because its the cool thing to do. im assuming that theres a large percentage of guys that ride fixed gears that hate on these trend followers just as much as people like us. im sure that most of the kids who just picked it up will give it up within a couple years once its died down, and then you'll have the dedicated guys still doing it forever. much like any other trend.

i would agree with somebody who said skateboarders set the trends. no doubt about that.

the only fixed gear bike rider i see here is an old man that used to be pro. his bike is pink and he walks it usually. he also wears his outfit.

I happened to see a chink attempt a slide on one of those fixies, last weekend, and the poor chink caught his foot in there.

i actually enjoyed that a lot, pretty raw

i still don't really understand how they work though.  you can't coast on them but there were plenty of times when he wasn't peddling and the bike was still in motion.

why cant they just ride a regular bike? is there any advantage of a fixy besides fitting in with the hipsters?

I haven't seen much of this fixed bike "culture," but it does sound annoying.

I have a BMX bike hanging in my garage that I have very little use for at the moment. When I go to university and find myself carless, a bike might be a good idea.

fixed gears are like the zip zingers of bicycling.

please let this thread die until someone brings it up again in six months.

why? zip zingers are fun to fuck around on and bomb through traffic, but if you're going to do something gnarly you're going to want to use a normal sized board that is better equiped to your needs. same thing with the fixed gear. i don't ride one, but i could see how it would be fun to fuck around on and cruise with, but if i was going to do serious freestyle or road biking, i'd want a proper bike for the job. how is that a horrible analogy?
