The "skater mindset" is bullshit.  I skate because I enjoy it, not because its my opportunity to be different from jocks.  There is nothing wrong with skating and coming home and cheering on your favorite team.  I mean basically the way I look at is I do what I want to do, not what some image dictates.  I watched what I could of the x-games because I enjoy seeing live skateboarding by dudes who rip.  Do I get excited when Sheckler raises his arms after landing something gnarly?  No, I think thats a joke, but when the dude 360 flips some huge gap I get psyched to see that go down first try.  Nothing wrong with competition in my eyes.

You need to be somewhat over skateboarding to appreciate/follow sports.

i say that certain skaters shouldn't be so close-minded and only like skateboarding. Sure skateboarding is fucking awsome, but there are other things in life even if they don't compete with skating one bit. variety is the spice of life (i know how cliche that sounds).

doing something you don't enjoy makes you a masochist, not more open minded. why's it so hard to believe that some peole find sports boring and uninteresting? most people finds skating boring and uninteresting; it's the same difference.

i have to agree with a lot of sleazy's analysis on the previous page.   in the same breath though, i think it was often the middle-class suburban kids who could and did stick with skating longest, because the other dudes had to get full-time jobs, knocked up their girls, got into drinking and drugs too much...    theres a lot more sam devlins out there than there are rick mccranks...   its pretty much impossible to trascend class is this society.

anyway, i worked for the canucks (and grizzlies) for 13 years and my enthusiasm for sports waxes and wanes.  some years i wouldnt watch a second of hockey on tv, but would see dozens of games live.  this past year, i watched every canucks game i could on tv and listened over the internet too.  ill clap when the home team scores, but ill also say 'nice save' or 'nice goal' when the other team does well.   i mainly want to see a good game, even if the home team loses.  god knows ive seen a lot of real snoozers...

that said, its always pretty hard to escape the homoerotic, overly competitive (ie: liberal), macho, ignoramus, hyper-commercialized, no-class mentality that pervades most professional team sports today.  fucking hate that shit so bad...

I grew up going to 8 broncos games a year until I went to college, I was going to games before I can remember.  When the Broncos lost the super bowl to the Giants in '87, I got a migraine and puked.  As much as I wish I could deny my feelings I can't.  I'm a Denver Broncos fan.  I even have an account on the Denver Broncos message board.

As far as it being off limits for a skater to be a sports fan, I think it is a little harsh to criticize what somebody does for a hobby.  My sports hobby uses up 3 hours a week 16 weeks a year.  Where as, my porn habit uses up to 10 times that amount of time.

Being a skateboarder from Lincoln, Nebraska I grew up despising the Huskers.  Then I moved to Oregon and watching Husker games was the only thing I had to quell my home sickness.  Now I'm back in Nebraska and realize it's not such a bad thing.

Mostly I watch soccer though.  At least that way I support a sport that most americans don't understand.  That makes me feel superior.

Oh, and even though I've decided to still support my home team, there is nothing worse than downtown Lincoln on a game day.

You and the D00D have turned this thread into a horrible head-on-collision between a short bus full of regular kids and a van full of paraplegics.

I'm not bashing skaters who do.. but personally, I think it's kind of conflicting with the whole skateboarding mindset.  I'm just really not interested in serious competition of any sort.  I don't care about stats, rookies, records, trophies, being #1, and shit like that.
I see no point in cheering on dudes playing sports, and feeling superior to the opposing team/town when they win.  They wouldn't come cheer for you at the spot.

Amen to that. I was going to come in this thread and say everything you already said. I enjoy watching basketball for just that... watching them play. I couldn't care less about the "winner" of the game. Watching basketball is just a fun little thing to spend time with my dad. It's also fun to play a casual game every now and then. I'm a fan of the Spurs, meaning that I do like them, but the outcome of the game doesn't matter and neither does any type of superiority for that outcome.

where the hell did this "skaters are only supposed to like skating" mindset come from? i blame it on transworld video voice overs

Hahahaha.

the non-competitive thing i think is probably a huge factor for most that don't watch.

i played hockey for a bit and i don't think i was very well liked by my team because i couldn't get into the competitive vibe at all. we'd loose and i'd be stoked because i did well, we'd win and i'd be bumbed because i played like shit. i just never really cared about if we won or lost, only if i was able to hit some good shots or throw some good d. i could really give a fuck if the star of the team was having a good day or not.

thats why i quit playing team sports because i was sick of people yelling at me to win more and shit when i thought i played well and was having fun. It just wasn't very fun anymore and a bunch of the people i played with were only in it because their parents had some big dream about their kids. Parents in my city are fucked on how hard they will cheer for their kid.

I like some sports.

NJ football Giants
NJ Devils

Thats about it though. I root for the Yanks as they are my home baseball team. Only the trashy kids around here like the Mets. And basketball is just super boring for me, I can play it, but def not watch it.

I dont understand the arguement "...hate on shekcler but root for your team." That shit doesnt make sense.

Skateboarding isnt meant to be competitive, (at least to me) where as that is reason sports were created. To compete.

Two totally different things here. And yes, I can understand where people find sports boring. My gf does too.

Pussies.

Did I say that you fucking person? People always try to manipulate my words to be as bad as possible, and in doing that, show that they are complete morons and/or have some sort of weird vendetta. NO, I didn't mean that at all. Sometimes I wonder if people on here are as bad at reading important stuff as they are at reading shit on here.
All I said is that you can be as hardcore of a skater as possible, and still have other interests. Whether they are sports, art, music, drugs, or anything else. Liking something else doesn't mean you dislike skating. Its stupid and immature to think that as a "real skater" all you should like is skating. All different types of people skate, and if you exclude yourself from the rest of the world in an attempt to get some sort of "real skateboarder" brownie points you are fucking yourself. Oh, and it'll be real hard to meet women that way.

do you really think that people don't do things they enjoy just too maintain a core image; that some how that's more likely then them just not being into sports? especially older guys...

i found it suprising that you were into mainstream sports because you're liberal and you skate. do you think it was silly or reasonable for me to be suprised? if it was reasonable then that's because the point that some of us are trying too make about this generalization is valid on some levels.

yeah, there are skaters that don't smoke weed but come on, we all know that a lot of them do and some of us like that about skating. it's the same kind of generalization. does it matter if you meet a skater who doesn't burn or isn't into music? no, but that doesn't change those generalizations which are accurate.

Oh, and it'll be real hard to meet women that way.

most women i've dated have really liked that i'm just as uninterested in sports as they are. just because your not into sports doesn't mean that you don't have interest outside of skating.

Ok, for the third time, my point wasn't specific to liking sports, my point was that exclusively liking skateboarding at the expense of anything else is dumb. Like skateboarding? Cool. Like Sports? Cool. Like oragami? cool. Like juggling? cool. Do you have to choose between any of those? No. To me saying you can't be a real skateboarder and like sports is dumb. People can like whatever they want and still be a hardcore skater. You can't be just a skateboarder or you will be one-dimensional.
I understand a lot of skaters don't like competitive sports. I'm in the same boat for the most part. I don't think I have watched a full sports game in years. But to say that there is a relationship between liking sports and not being into skateboarding as the ironically named "Captain Obvious" pointed out, is dumb and juvenile.

But yes, Sleazy, I do think people do stuff just to mantain a core image all the time.

I just  don't get how people can get so excited about watching something so mundane as a bunch of dudes playing with a ball. Boxing is tight as fuck though, I can definitely get into the combat sports.

it's kind of like how you get excited when you see people playing on a board with wheels on it.
I used to post
