Brand that started on the no one of a recession ends on the no one of a recession. Idk if this is the death note for the skate industry. This is just nature correcting itself. Ace should have died in 2008 when the economy crumbled.

For sure the current climate makes for some interesting questions production wise globally. But it's weird watching people act like this is it. Every decade there's some new economical/societal challenge that's gonna mean death for skateboarding and it never happens. Skateboarding is too big to fail at this point. For sure we might lose some niche brands and smaller passion projects. You may have to accept lesser quality or questionable manufacturing moves from your favorite brand and I'm not saying that's good. But it's not the end. Skateboarding been here plenty of time. It may not be a good time but it isnt end of times. People were saying the bubble was gonna burst long before we were even in the Olympics but realistically skateboarding isn't going anywhere.

Trump and co suck they are making a havoc of the markets for sure. But it would not hurt for manufacturing to return to the states. Especially if both China and US are play the tariff game. And if US get its way and charges astronomical container rates. Between that and them trying to get away from foreign lumber usage. On paper it could work out a positive for brand her based in America who want to manufacture in amarica and employ American workers. Thats a pipe dream I know. And thats not gonna happen. But it is a byproduct of everything going on people don't realize. So many industries that could be jump started by these stupid economic fighting actual benefit skateboarding. Rubber/plastics, maple, steel/aluminum, with everything going on skateboarding companies in America aren't in all that bad of a spot if they can weather the storm that is.

It's bad. But it isnt awful.
People are really naive enough to believe companies will just uproot their manufacturing bases and pay more for labor to move operations back to the states because Trump said it's not fair.

New flash, Trump's trade war is awful because he has no fucking clue how tariffs work and it will only lead to increased prices for the consumer.

Domestic manufacturing isn't gonna come back in any significant way, we'll just be dealing with price gouging on foreign goods for the foreseeable future

To the extent we have seen "reshoring" in the US, it has owed primarily to two things: the massive deregulation of the labor market and rapid increases in automation. And it's not as if paying sub-minimum wage to contract and migrant workers or increases in productivity have seen prices fall over the past two decades.

Even if some enterprising capitalist wanted to bring back the Fordist model of production, no one would undertake such an endeavor in an environment where tariffs are being threatened and pulled back on an hourly basis.

consisder - how much of these "American Owned" companies, are actually fully American owned? I imagine tons of publicly traded companies are massively owned internationally, even if 51% is owned by an American, or whatever is considered the point you "own" it...

What are people gonna use all these public skateparks for in 200 years when no one skates anymore?
Dancing, small vehicle testing, nuclear waste storage, scrap concrete, decorative ponds or gardens, architectural molds for the Inverse Skatepark school of architecture, sunbathing, bladerunning, subterfuge, "heritage sites", playgrounds, blockwork, sites for amusement parks if homo sapiens shrinks to 1/24th size or amusement parks for smaller animals, mini-golf (either related or not related to the previous), things we can't even imagine yet, and/or more, probably, i don't know. i think about it sometimes but only for about 4-8 seconds or until i get distracted, whichever comes first, but it's interesting.

A shrine to a god called NBD. No one knows what this worship entailed but anthropologists have found ritualistic carved wooden figures. These were broken in half, maybe as part of a sacrifice to NBD

I often think about the prospect of skateparks being the site of executions/mass graves if a shtf scenario were to play out.

crack doesn't exist in 2225, neither does heroin or other narcotics. it's all been replaced by fluupt and blarp. fluupt is injected into the eyes while blarp is ingested in the mouth. people no longer have more than three teeth, however. also, we no longer have anuses in the year 2225, the human waste system is streamlined to a single removable compartment, kind of like a moist paper shredder.

Boomers love pickleball and hate skateboarding.
Pickleball is the new tennis for out of shape boomers, so when it's time to build their stupid fucking miniature tennis courts the quickest and easiest group to push out of public spaces are skateboarders, who they hate anyways, so it's a win-win.

Just a guess though...

I don’t know how it is where everyone else lives, but in my town it’s all Gen X and elder millennials playing pickleball at the local courts.

Most of the time the people who organize the best and get in the parks dept ear the most are the ones who get new shit for their sport.

Pickleballers are mostly older, more established people who are good at organizing and sending emails.

That  mixed with the growing popularity of the sport is proving to be an obstacle for new skateparks getting prioritized unfortunately.

At least that's how it seems to me. I was pretty involved in that whole deal for a while and was lucky enough to get funding for a couple skateparks confirmed before every meeting had 20 pickleballers there.

But towards the end of my efforts they definitely  outnumbered every other interest group attending parks and rec type meetings.

My local shop (I'm in New Jersey) cant move any of the Ace inventory they have. They said when they first came out that they were selling okay, so they ordered another 100 pairs and cant sell shit. Its been like 2 years and they can’t even give them away.
