Showing a kid videos from 30 years ago will almost certainly alienate them, I’d start with new stuff.

I'd say that depends almost entirely on the individual and what they are drawn to. If they are into contemporary stuff when it comes to music and movies/TV, then I agree starting with new vids would be the way to go. But there's also lots of kids who actively reject whatever is hot right now and gravitate toward older stuff. Someone like that might dig older vids more. But I don't think this has to be either/or since it's so easy to watch individual parts nowadays. @rocklobster why not pick a handful of all-time parts from different eras that you personally love and start there?

video days was one of my very first videos and guy's part really stuck with me back then because he was also little and the tricks were impressive but easy to understand, like the manual to boardslide on a handrail. this was in 2011 and i liked that video a lot more than say fully flared. there's actually a bunch of kids that want to know more about their interests and the fact that YOU didn't care doesn't really mean anything

Bag of Suck without a doubt. Lighthearted, good soundtrack, top notch skating, recognizable names.

I always enjoyed the Transworld videos when I was younger. Hit em with the Sight Unseen.

Solid recommendations - I recommended First Love after seeing Tom K re-create Shiloh's opening line on Insta. TWS is a great gateway video for younger skaters, everything PG13.

Anything else closer to the 2020s? DC SHOES : SABOTAGE x DC comes to mind.

this is the only response that isn't delusional as hell lol y'all really think a 13 year old in 2026 who currently only watches Youtube shorts is gonna be stoked on Questionable and Video Days? i started skating in the early 2000s around that age and it was already hard to get kids interested in those videos at that time

The fact that YOU, Roba, cared about video days when you started skating in 2015 means even less, because that’s definitely not the norm. But sure, throw on 20 shot sequence and animal chin too. Let’s make another Andy Anderson.

I agree, also The Reason, In Bloom, and a bunch of other classics.

i've never seen animal chin and i'm not going to but 20 shot sequence is great and when i used to run a skateshop i'd throw it on often and a bunch of teenagers would ask me about it, same with video days. both are very easy to understand for someone who doesn't know a whole lot about skateboarding. actually a lot of my friends who are the same age or younger would watch a bunch of older videos because of the same reasons i mentioned before. you on the other hand are 40+, probably fat, probably divorced, spending entire days on slap and you try to speak for the youth lol

I think the Tilt Mode videos would be good too. Man Down is still one of my favorite videos and shows a bunch of friends having a blast skating!

I had the opportunity to screen Spirit Quest on a loop in an art gallery setting and everybody went crazy for it- especially the kids and younger folks that came by.

I’d second Man Down by Tiltmode Army. Also Misled Youth - Zero
Nervous Breakdown - Foundation
Kicked Out Of Everywhere - Real
For more modern videos:
Quickstrike- Nike
Earth Goblin - Heroin

Guys, kids don't want old videos....even John's vid or 917 is old to them.

Young / beginner skaters don't have taste yet. They just want to look cool and BE LIKE THE COOL OLDER KIDS AT SCHOOL, not unc shit.

Trendy contemporary is where you want to be, just the full length version.

Here's a video from 3 years ago (maybe already too old) but it's high schoolers skating to trap music and decked out in Hockey and shit.

They (new skaters) don't have taste in tricks yet, there's no need to rec some high level switch tech skating

I’m sure I’ll get kooked, but ‘Fully Flared’ is a good pick I’d think.
Especially with that intro…

The OP says “to the large culture of skate videos”.
If someone just started getting interested in music and you only showed them one genre or time period, it would be a great disservice to them.

I understand where you are coming from and fully admit I’m biased - I’m 43 and was blown away when seeing videos like Misled Youth because it was groundbreaking (and I was young and impressionable) at the time. My connection with that video will never compare to say the generation older than me’s connection to Video Days etc.

The OP specifically asked for videos that are different than IG, the thing about the early 00’s videos that make them special to me is the format of individual parts, where you really get a feel for the skateboarder’s personality.

If someone is first getting interested in something it is a great idea to see *all* that skate culture has to offer. You never know what will click with someone, so freestyle, vert, hesh, tech, etc. are all potentially great sources of inspiration.
