What was affecting to me, aside from his unparalleled skating, was how he conducted himself in interviews. It was never some listless affair - he always said intelligent, eye-opening things, or honest things, or funny things. Reading and watching his interviews, and being exposed to how fun his personality could be, was something I took to heart when it came to caring about skateboarding. He exhibited how to be an individual, how to value wit and grace, and that meant so much when I was growing up and figuring out how skating fit into my life.
I saw him skate in person on the Se Habla Canuck tour, first demo I ever went to and first time seeing pros in person, and witnessed his back tail three shove down the park hubba firsthand. I and everyone else went bonkers when he landed it...I fanned out on him briefly in the parking lot afterward, acting intentionally over-the-top, and he did the same in a kind way...it was and will be unforgettable.
Wishing the best for his son Avery, and his family and friends.
