should I go to a doctor?
« on: October 10, 2008, 04:50:51 AM »
I really hurt me knee yesterday, there were to movable banks back to back and I was screwing around hitting one as fast as I could to try to clear the other one and I kicked my board out. Kicking my board out and not knowing how high I was, I ended up landing with all my weight on one leg and I guess I kinda hyperextended my left knee. It went back, and then to the right. As soon as I got up my leg buckled and the knee bent the wrong way again for a second.

I started being careful and it was ok last night but I wont up this morning to absolute pain, like tears. I took some ibuprofen and got some crutches and forced myself to go to work and I can walk on it if I keep it in one position. I can't straighten it, it feels like somethin in there will break, but I can bend it the other way. Oh yeah and I can feel some kind of fluid moving around in there if I push on it.

Should I go to a doctor? I have insurance but it is still expensive and I will be f'ed. If my ability to ride is on the line though I will have to bite the bullet and go. What do you think?

Go. Even if it's expensive you can work out payment plans with hospitals.

I'm not one to go to a doctor for everything. Does this sound like something that wont heal on its own? I am gaining mobility in it as the day goes by. I can move it from a 90 degree angle to almost straight now

it might not heal correctly and if you fall again it might fuck you up badly. so i'd say don't take chances and go see the doctor

I'm not one for going to the doctor for every little thing either, but when I hurt my knee I went to one.  It turned out nothing serious.  At least it gave me peace of mind knowing that.

Alright thanks guys, I guess I will go when I can. It doesn't seem to be healing right. The swelling has gone down and its not really sore anymore...until I try to straighten it. It just doesn't straighten, like its going to snap soemthing in there. I have to walk with my leg bent and it sometimes buckles backwards on me and hurts like hell.

I went to the doctor, she didn't know anything about it she just told me to get an x-ray and MRI. I have to do all that to go to a real knee doctor, this whole process is going to take a few weeks  :-\

Shit sucks man, i twisted my knee in august and went to an Orthopedic, he misdignosed me and said I strained my MCL, I walked around on it and worked for 2 months and it felt ok, i still couldnt skate on it, got an MRI and my ACL was obliterated, they said If i ever wanted to skate again i had to have the surgery. Its been 5 days since the surgery,  Shit hurts like hell but I start physical therapy monday, and should be able to skate again by April, so not hyped on learning how to walk again

nkarasch, your situation sounds just like what I went through a few months ago... I wound up having a torn meniscus. I was dorking, bent my knee slightly sideways after falling off a little rail, and immediately felt a very brief but sharp pain, followed by a small amount of discomfort. I felt like my knee had a little extra "give" to it, but I went on to skate for a while afterwards until I was tired.

I went to bed later that night, then was woken up at three or four in the morning to excruciating pain and swelling... it felt like I had acid running around in my knee and boiling water on top of it, totally fucked. I hobbled, went to the doc, nothing showed up on the Xray but the MRI showed the tear.

I had surgery, and I'll just tell you what Thiebaud and Cliff (here) told me... it's the easiest knee surgery you go through. Three small incisions, the doc trims the tear, and you sport some sutures for about a week while keeping your knee supported with a wrap or a light brace (and regular ice and ibuprofen).

After the sutures are taken out (roughly a week or so), you'll be able to skate (within limits) right off the bat because the meniscus doesn't really heal or anything... it's just a little pad of cartilage. You might have a *little* bruising and soreness from the surgery, but nothing that will really have an effect on your skating. There's really nothing you can do to your knee to reverse the fix that the surgery provides, though you can always re-tear it... you're not more susceptible to tear it again though.

The surgery is walk-in, crutch-out in the same day, and the crutches are only for a day or three depending on your doctor's advice.  You can also get pain meds that you won't realistically need.

Of course I'm not diagnosing your shit (see a specialist as soon as you can) and make sure. If it is your meniscus, start riding a bike to ensure that your knee is as strong as possible post-surgery. I had mine done just a few months ago and I figure on transition I'm 100% back (which is mostly what I skate), on street I'm about 90% back... if only because I don't like to risk big jumps down shit. Then again, I'm 33 and pretty haggard medically speaking (past injuries and whatnot), so if you're younger you'll be bouncing back in absolutely no time at all.

Make sure you see a specialist before you do any bike riding or swimming though. Hopefully it isn't your ACL, as Lance basically said it's a bit more complicated of a recovery (not an injury I've had, knock on wood), but before I knew for sure,  Thiebaud reminded me that half his guys wreck their ACLs on a regular basis and still kill... namely Trujillo.

Good luck man.

You would be correct, I got my MRI results today and I have two tears in my meniscus. Yeah my dad had the same surgery and he said he expects I wont be skating until december but fuck that shit. I skated today, couldn't ollie and when I would fall I had to just tuck and roll to make sure I didn't bend it but at least I was able to ride my board. Luckily I hurt the knee that doesn't push so I can get on my board and push as fast as I can without any pain at all.

So the surgery isnt bad? He said his hurt him really bad for about a week, but hes pretty old so maybe its different for us?

I'm a surgery chickenshit... I don't mind getting stitches, but the idea of surgery makes me shudder. Should I ever tear my meniscus again and need the surgery done one more time, I'd do it without hesitation. You'll be off your board for a little bit, but that's the worst part of it and you won't even be off that long. I can't relate to your dad's experience at all... do try to get a sports doctor that specializes. If you have a university or school in your area, I'd get ahold of someone in the coaching staff of some random sport to see who they recommend... they see their students/players go to every kind of doctor for every kind of injury and see how they recoup first hand.

It has felt perfectly fine, and it would today, but I've already bruised the shit out of it twice since surgery (once very recently). But internally, it's fine. I'm healthy enough to go out and get hurt more. The only thing different about my knee is that it has three very little "X" shaped scars on my knee. Other than that, it's like nothing happened.

anybody know anything about ankle injuries?

i can move it enough to do just about any trick that doesn't involve a straight up kickflip(b/s flip etc) its been bugging me for about a month now and i still haven't seen a doctor and i can run on it without any pain.

stay off it or keep skating as i have been?

Yeah I fucked mine and never went to a doctor and it hurt enough where I couldn't do a kickflip for about 3 months while everything else was fine. I would avoid flip tricks all together for a while until kickflips don't hurt, any bad landing with your foot hanging off will probably destroy it.

If it started hurting without you rolling it bad then go see a doctor because that is just wrong

1) Complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament.
2) Vertical tear in the posterior horn of the medial meniscus.
3) Grade 1 injury of the medial collateral ligament

great

My major piece of advice here is stick out the "no skating/activity" phase, and then do strength building exercises for your knees before you start really skating again. I messed my knee up two years ago, and because I didn't take a month or so off, I ended up re-injuring it about six times, and not skating well for a year. Take the time off, make some art.

I had one of these about a month ago, I heard a crack but knew it wasn't broken.  Turns out I got an ankle sprain plus an Avulsion Fracture, which means the ligament pulled a piece of bone off of your ankle.  After a month my ankle still hurts like a bitch, with no end in sight, and that's without any skating or anything

i don't think mines that bad, because mine only hurts if i bend it far enough in one direction, for example if i try kickflips, i feel large amounts of pain.

How bad is like hell :(

Physical therapy? What?! Can't I just exercise it on my own? I guess the doctor will say. I have insurance but this is still gonna be so expensive, I can barely pay my bills now

I'm decently still young, and I already have ankle pains. I've sprained/broken/tore ligaments like 4 times two each foot. and i will never be able to walk the same again, i can skate perfect..but 5 mins after sitting down after a sesh. forget it!

I am so glad Canada has free health care. I can't imagine what it would be like to debate going to the doctor or not because I'd have to pay for it. That fucking sucks.
