sheet metal top, costs around 40 bucks and it made the top of the box amazing to skate.....

Sheet metal is just going to get dented as fuck. Then you are going to have a bumpy surface. Just go faster.

not really, we glued and screwed the sheet metal down while having ppl walk it down from 1 edge to the other, so its flat on the wood....

but it makes the box insanely heavy....

the only problem i see is the box getting wet and having the sheet metal start to come up when the wood warps.
make sure you don't keep it outside and if you do, cover it with a tarp.

Screws are better, no questions asked.

Top layer of particle board with a few layers of spar varnish and sanding. Rock solid and smooth.
[close]

i never believed in using screws till yesterday when i finally finished constructing 2 boxes...  it takes a lot more work because you have to drill first and then screw, but the boxes are looking solid as fuck....  i think we used close to 100 screws and under 10 nails...

we got a piece of sheet metal for the top layer of the box which should protect the top layer of wood from chipping and give really good slides....

ill upload pics soon....
You don't need to drill pilot holes.

^ you don't have to but you're almost always better off.
in doing so it keeps the wood from splitting.
not that it happens all the time but it happens often enough.

if you're going to build something, you do it right and you make it last!

You could have spent half that and bought a big sheet of recycled plastic, like what they use on park benches now. It's about as pliable as wood, durable as anything, and slides like butter. Best of all, it isn't too slick for manual tricks.... not to mention the fact that it won't burn the shit out of you in the Summer when you go to skate that thing.
