but there is different layouts for the messageboard, the standard "simple machines" (called SMF Default Theme) one shits on the default slap one, and everything (including avatars) loads a helluva lot faster

Aight didn't think so; go to "profile" then "look and layout preferences" then "change" right by where it says "current theme"
