I see you focused your acct.  Regardless that is one of the most boring uninspired lists I have ever seen.  Sure, lots of good ones on there, but all safe.  Go experiment.

I'm not a big fan of people calling others bandlists "safe". Like if I were just to write a short list it'd probably be something like "Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Metallica, Sabbath, whatever..". And thats a "safe" list, right? But who cares, it's a reason why it's safe, it's a reason why those bands are huge, they're superior to most other bands. I could go on listing up 20 obscure bands, but that wouldn't be right, cause they're not in my top 5-10 (even though you get cred for liking bands nobody have heard of). BUT that being said it was a pretty crappy list he had.

I see your point, and yeah there are some good bands on there (I'd leave a TON of them off though because the majority of those bands should have hung it up LONG ago or just suck, period).  But what bugs me most about safe lists is that there is no point for them.  Like your list, and I respect a lot of what you post because you seem to know your shit, is just typical.  I've seen a million lists in mags with those same bands being the top bands of all time (and all time lists suck usually) because it's all the same shit over and over and over.

Yes, I tend to listen to a lot of weird shit that not many people are into, but I like the older stuff too.  It's just that if I never had another conversation about Metallica's first 4 albums or Sabbath or Slayer, it wouldn't be a big deal.  And yeah while I love Slayer and Metallica, their more recent stuff has made me like them LESS.  But my favorite bands are more obscure to the mainstream but I've liked them since more damn near or more than a decade and they don't have any shitty releases.

Anyways, I've been listening to Portal all day while drawing.  Very odd Death Metal band from Australia.  Check the video to see just how weird...

I know, right?!  When you say it out loud it just sounds silly, but when you SEE it.... that's another thing.  And he goes by the name "The Curator", how awesome is that?  I just got their new album "Swarth" and it is the best Death Metal album I have heard this year.
just listened to "Swarth". I like it but do not know how to describe it. I suppose this picture sums it up pretty well.

Ahhhhhh I am going to disagree actually.  That may have been my biggest letdown of the year.  I am not really into a lot of prog type shit, and that one just had too much guitar masturbation.  They also failed to let Brann Dailor really go off on his drumming like they did on the other albums, he felt very reined in.  I also am not a fan of Brent Hinds' nasally ass pseudo Ozzy vocals.  In fact I think they are terrible.  Just not my thing man.
I was talking about the album cover, but yeah i really only enjoyed the title track with Scott Kelly on vocals.

I really like how the same riff appears in several songs, it's an interesting way to make an album fluid.  A Horse Called Golgotha is one of my favorite songs of the year.

if you like that, have you ever heard "hangman's hymn" by sigh? it's such a good cd. it's arranged like an opera and the last song hase sections from all of the other songs within it and other songs do the same thing. it's funny that most bands repeat riffs and structures because they don't know what else to write, but the second someone knows what they're doing, it can work really well.

that "the portal" band was pretty sweet. when i'm back in the states, i'll have to pick up their new album. what guitar was their one guitarist playing that video? one was a 7 string, but the other guitar's neck looked huge!

I know I sound like a huge BDM fanboy in this thread, but this belongs in a discussion about best album art of '09 (even though we've passed that a little bit):

I am sure there are some fans around here, but the new Baroness is out.  Excellent album.  Streaming the whole thing on myspace.

And in my opinion, best album art of the year

checking out the red album and do these guys sound a lot like isis or is it just me? i like a lot of the elements but the isis thing is making it hard for me to get into it.

They are in some odd subgenre like Pelican.  It's not their heaviness that makes them metal, it's the complexity and song structures.

makes sense

new album by them is really good if anyone like them. it's definitely an easy way to burn through a productive hour at work.

Newest Slayer was like after a really hot bath when your balls are all saggy and then you sit on them.
St.Anger II production wise, just horrible. And half the songs were embarrassing too, like "Playing with Dolls". But I bet a few of the songs will work really good live.

Oh and for ambient black metal..... well Burzum reigns supreme because every other band rips Varg off, but Lurker Of Chalice and Xasthur rank pretty high.

yep, Russian Circles is Pelican without the shitty drummer.

"Aske" isn't too ambient though. Especially compared with later Burzum. i got to listen to "MoRT" and "Odinist: The Destruction of Reason by Illumination" by Blut Aus Nord this weekend after not not listening to BAN for a while. Man, those albums are so good.
