been listening to a lot of Black Cobra (feat. one of the guys from Acid King)

shit, I'll co-sign this, too. just got Chronomega today, definitely some good shit.

I also bought a Southern Lord comp via itunes for $1.  money well spent.

I actually only like maybe half the bands/records on Southern Lord, but for a buck I'll take it.

Black Cobra are excellent, Eagle Twin has some good shit, the Earth album is good, WITTR are ok if not my bag, the Gore reissues were good. Lair Of The Minotaur fucking rule. on the other hand, I have tried to like Boris to pretty much no avail, same thing with Wino/Vitus, etc. I know that's metal heresy but I think it's just fucking boring rockin' blooze shit. I would rather listen to fucking Monster Magnet, honestly. more to the point, I don't think I like any of the records the owners play on. Sunn O))) might rule live, but their records are fucking boring. Goatsnake had radd guitar work but I can't stand the singing. Khanate make my skin crawl (I know that's the idea, but no.)

The live Om record was a disgrace, too. Om is one of my favorite bands, but that recording/pressing was total shit.

I have actually never checked out Burning Witch. I gotta get on that.

as for LOTM, I've never seen them live, but I think their records are pretty decent.
Mainly, I think "War Metal Battle Master" is possibly the greatest metal video ever,
and for that alone they get the thumbs up from me.

My copy of "The Mystical Beast of Rebellion" came in yesterday. I haven't listened to it yet, but I already know it's gonna be awesome. Just from the cover and everything, I'm stoked. And now I have Blut Aus Nord's entire CD catalog so it's already worth the $60.

That new High on Fire song is fucking awesome.  It's the perfect thing to hear as I'm trying to kick the ass of the remaining snow and ice hindering my car from escaping our beastly driveway.

I'm not that great with the categorization of music (because people get carried away and who the fuck really cares?) but I would consider all these bands somewhere in the realm of metal. I mostly listen to grind/power-violence type stuff.

Top 5 for this month:

Thoughts of Ionesco-The Scar Is Our Watermark
Darkthrone-Transylvanian Hunger
Sawtooth Grin-The Cuddle Monster
Sleep-Holy Mountain
Leval Blessing-s/t

Honorable mention:
Watchmaker-Kill.Fucking.Everyone

Suffocation's "Human Waste" album

Some good shit right there, I suggest having a beer handy while listening to them.

I really almost never want to listen to death metal, but the past couple of days it's been just the thing.

just listened to Incantation, now I'm about to jam some old Immolation.

no problem. I like 'em, but all their songs kind of sound the same. it's a cool tune, though, and I bet they're great live.

I agree, I rarely listen to DM these days, but I am actually listening to Entombed's LHP as well.... that solo after the Phantasm theme..... awesome.

yep, old Entombed was great. shit, I like the death and roll shit, too.
new death metal just sounds so shitty to me these days.
it's all the same bullshit triggered kick drums and sweep picking thru the whole song...crap.

Super pissed because Metal Haven (an all metal CD store in Chicago) is closing their doors soon. They've been open 10 and a half years and this will leave a huge fucking hole in Chicago's metal scene.

I went to Metal Haven yesterday for one of the last times with a few of my buddies and picked these up:

Anaal Nathrakh-In the Constellation of the Black Widow
Crowpath-Red on Chrome
Rotten Sound-Cycles
Septic Flesh-Communion
Taake-S/T

I've only had a chance to listen to Anaal Nathrakh, Rotten Sound, and Septic Flesh so far, but I'm happy with my purchases and happy to throw some more money into the place. I think I'm going to head back up there next week and see if the new Sigh album is restocked and I might pick up the newest Wolves In The Throne Room album. I wasn't too stoked on their first two albums, but I want to re-listen to them now that I'm into more shoegaze-y black metal and their newest album is supposed to be more traditional black metal than their other ones were.

I've gotten a chance to listen to all of the CDs I bought and I'm very pleased with all of them. Anaal Nathrakh's album is fucking amazing as is Rotten Sound's. Although I do wish Rotten Sound used a little more of their typical crazy, fast stop-go grindcore on Cycles rather than the less stilted songs, but I understand that they can't just rehash Murderworks and Exit and it still kicked ass. I was really surprised at how much I liked the Crowpath album. It was proggy, funky grind. I told my friend imagine if early Mastodon played grindcore-that would be that Crowpath album.  The Taake album was pretty good too. It wasn't the kind of black metal I expected. It felt closer to black thrash, but still distinctly black metal (a very shitty description). The Septic Flesh was probably the worst album out of all of them. I still liked it and it has some really good hooks to catch onto, but if it  was more death metal-y it would be a stronger album. For some reason, I kept thinking a less technical and brutal Nile, even though that really isn't accurate and was probably because "Communion" was Egyptian mythology/atmosphere inspired. But imagine a more death metal (early/mid) Graveworm with occasional clean vocals and that was Septic Flesh. I will say that I enjoyed their incorporation of an orchestra and choir into simple death metal and all they need to do is build up/complicate the death metal aspects and they'll be set.
