We've mentioned all of these bands in here (I think), but man-I am slipping on keeping up with CDs. Happy about Blut Aus Nord's placement in the list though.

If you want to read my insomnia induced ranting about Blut Aus Nord, it's on here: http://stereogum.com/891391/album-of-the-week-blut-aus-nord-777-the-desanctification/top-stories/

Sorry for being a broken record about them.

In other news, Gaza is trying to release their new album sometime in March. Yay!

got this on this morning. i like the things that you don't like about black metal. the whole idea of not letting the drum pace drown out the rest of the music "letting it breath" as you put it. i don't mind a build up to some intense double bass but just a non-stop assault gets a little boring. you got any other recomendations? i'm sure there in the thread but if you don't mind reposting a few things.

Not sure if you think I wrote the Album of the Week column, but my insomniac rant was actually in the comments to that piece. As for black metal recommendations, Blut Aus Nord is really the only one that I've been consistently listening to lately. For really out there avant-garder/experimental black metal, Mirrorthrone is good (but kind of on a different spectrum). Leviathan. The little bit I've heard from The Konsortium I like. Nunfuckritual is surprisingly different from what I expected (ended up not being just straight blast beats and stuff). Peste Noire is good, Drudkh, Ulver. Nortt is kind of ambient/atmospheric. Portal is closer to death metal, but with odd amounts of atmosphere akin to Blut Aus Nord and Wolves in the Throne Room.

I forgot how good Mirrorthrone is. Sleazy-you might like this band. It's avant-garde/experimental symphonic black metal.

Also-does anyone like Liturgy? If so, can you tell me why? I listened to a few songs off of "Aesthethica" and they didn't seem deserving of the praise they've been getting.

My top 20 albums of the year:

http://www.lukephysioc.com/blog/top-20-albums-of-2011/
lots of black metal as i expected so i cant really relate (though i am slowly digging craft's void more and more so thanks for that recommendation) but obviously i dont need to say anything about how glorious that APMD record is.  i cant wait to see them in brooklyn next month.

rotten sound's record is really fucking sick too, pretty much the only grind band i can say i legitimately enjoy. i kinda dig pig destroyer but thats about it.

Got The Konsortium's s/t debut and The CNK's "Ultraviolence Uber Alles" reissue for Christmas. The Konsortium's is really good. Kind of reminds me of early Norwegian black metal, but with clearer production, but with enough variations in the music and vocals to keep everything interesting. I've heard The CNK album before (not in a while), but it's pretty violent and exciting industrial black metal.

Been spending some time on http://www.grindtodeath.com/ and http://grindandpunishment.blogspot.com/ today. Downloaded this really good 5 min. demo, "Teaching Pigs to Sing" from a band I just found out about called Standing on a Floor of Bodies. It's a one man band by Mike Stitches who was in Thousandswilldie (who I also just learned about today). The link to download it is below.

Not sure if this is the kind of metal you guys are into but I have to share this band Gojira with you. I feel like too many times in metal today the music is dumbed down for the 16 year old energy drink demographic. This band seems to bring compelling messages in their music and I personally think they flat out shred. This is a newer song from with Fredrik of Meshuggah and Devin Townsend of SYL.

You are listening to the wrong bands then my friend.  But yes, Gojira is good. They put on a great live show.

saw thou this week. they ended with and into the void cover. i caught a bigger dudes back to the face and bled everywhere. it was like the best night ever. really bummed thou might not be a band anymore, but i'm glad i got to see them 2 of the 3 times they played in LA, and have some of their records and a shirt.

I don't listen to the Monster drink music, but I also think Gojira is as boring as they come.  Not a surprise since I think Meshuggah is nap-inducing.

Just out of curiosity, are you one of those dudes that pretty much likes ALL things metal?
for sure haha - only genre i can say i actively dont enjoy is black. its only palatable for me if its diluted with something, like black n roll or blackened thrash.
