Really not stoked on vans starting to make rowley shoes out of leather / suede.  It's getting harder and harder to find quality non-leather skate shoes these days.

Yeah, I just checked the Vans site (http://skate.vans.com/SHOES/shambles.html) and the new rowley model is suede or nubuck. If the decision comes from vans they just suck.
But I don't get it because taxes are usually higher on leather than synthetic.

At least in the US, the taxes are higher on synthetics.  In Japan it's much cheaper to import synthetics.

There are still a few pairs of the slims that are vegan, and all of the OG rowleys are too, but it's not a good direction to be moving in for someone who doesn't buy leather or suede.
