Where Are They Now? Ron Knigge
« on: November 30, 2009, 03:22:29 PM »
There's often a lot of discussion about old skaters from days gone by on the forum- what they did then, where they went after skating, what they're doing now. Early-90s über technician Ron Knigge is one of the many who have been wondered about, and we recently had a chance to catch up with the man himself to get the inside scoop...

We'll have a few more of these coming before too long, too...

I liked Whatever. I can understand why he would be bummed on it though.

Ron's 1281 part has been one of my favorite parts for ages - I'd somehow never seen his Children of the Sun part until now, tho. Man, what a great part. His style got a lot cleaner and more powerful right before he quit.

It always amazes me when guys who were that talented at skating say that they never even skate for fun anymore.

Nice job, guys.

i always liked his part in children of the sun. I was bummed that he disappeared after his style got cleaner. Rene Mathysen is another dude that i thought was sick from children of the sun. Dude had a really good style

COTS was such a great video. I only got to see it a few years after it came out but it aged well. I think the white fadeouts had something to do with it.

People always talk shit on early 90's videos. But the New Deal videos were awesome.

50% of the shit in them had never been seen before.

At the time, it didn't matter how slow they were going.

Talking shit on the small wheels big pants era is so cool right now...

The funny thing is, at the time, it was the coolest shit ever... Skating and fashion was going places it had never been before... I mean shell toes, clydes, gazelles and shit??? No one wore that shit back then except for skaters, few years later, everyone who was cool was on that shit, biting OUR style...Dont get it twisted, thems days was dope...

Thanks Whiteley!  I forgot how good his COTS part was.  We used to watch that video every day when I was in 10th grade.

for reals!  everyone in every video was dropping something new.
it was kind of crazy because you were trying to keep up with all the new tricks but by the time you learned something new, a bunch of new tricks were getting thrown down.  i think it was like 3 years straight where my jaw stayed dropped. not just from watching videos but seeing the other skaters around me actually trying tricks i'd never seen before.

as far as fashion, for years we got made fun of for what we were wearing.
i think it took like 2 years before everyone was biting our style and i mean everyone!
skateboarding has always remained ahead of the fashion curve/trends.

anyway, i really want to learn ollie late ollies.
the gonz could probably pull it off.

i always thought the older videos had a lot more creativity... its like, the first videos were real creative, then the closer they got to 2000 they started getting really cookie cutter... now as we fade away from 2000 its getting more like that o.g. shit again

this right here is what the digi-slap is all about. fuck yeah whiteley. the interview was really cool and i've been waiting to hear something from him forever it seems. dude could still do nollie triple flips after just stepping on a board again? crazy. i can't tell you how bummed i was to hear him say he's fully over it though. but to each his own i guess. he seems happy and  comfortable, so...

I always wondered what that dude was up to after he threw in the towel. The last thing I remember seeing of him was a photo in 1994. That was a great read. Thank you.

I hope he mentions a little about being in 411 and Clikitat Ikatowi as well as anything else he's playing in.

Looking forward to what Girard is up to these days.

Damn that sequence would be jaw-dropping if it were published today, never mind 15 years ago.
