Chris Cook "Cooksie" Injured
« on: September 10, 2006, 11:24:19 AM »
His gal contacted me to ask for skate community support, cards, letters, etc. Chris broke his leg in 7 places while skating and it's pretty serious. I will post more when she gets back to me with an address, details, and what they need.

man..that's shitty...i remember once like...in 90 or something, i was at the skateranch on a summer day...no one was there....chris cook and TA showed up and skated....they seemed cool enough....they wouldn't make the 'skaters who are dicks' thread...that's for sure...

He is a former pro skater for Alva and a ripper to this day. He helped get an amazing park built in Pacifica and just a long time bay area skater.

Well I wouldn't go so far as to say he was an "amazing skater" I mean he was good I used to see him skate the Devil's pit bowl/ditch but he could barely ollie at the time and when I would see him skate street(like at GGP) he bust all these tricks that only style guys could one up like Scott Oster or Aarron "fingers" Murray. I think it sucks he broke his leg and all but I wouldn't say he was that amazing he was ok I think he was pretty lucky to be on Alva.

A whole lot of guys that were pro in the mid-80s couldn't ollie. It wasn't all that uncommon. Chris Cook's fellow Alva-boy Bill Danforth placed very well in a lot of contests and he never did anything even dirivative of an ollie.

A broken leg in seven places sounds like he was hit by a car, not skateboarding. Jesus...

Heal quickly and well, Chris.
You have me mistaken with someone that is important.

Yeah like  Dave Hackett and Alva's Fred Smith and what about Alva's John Thomas? his board sold well because kids were psyched on his tuck-knee airs off jump ramps.

The thing is I never really got hyped on those pro's. I was more hyped on more up and coming ams at the time that were pushing real street skating. Like Mic-E Reyes - yes when he was on Concrete Jungle, Jeff Whitehead, Shawn Martin,Wheatberry, Noah Peacock Tony Henry.

It's weird reading the words "up and coming ams" and MicE in the same sentence.  He was definitely one of the OG ams who focused more on street shredding after Tommy G, Mark, Natas etc. started to define street skating.

Chris just started a MySpace page. Here is what he wrote:

First and foremost I give thanks to the creator of all things whose works, not my own, but through him blessing us eye and eye with the love and grace and joy of skateboarding and the fun it brings us all. In 1990, I got hit crossing an intersection by a dodge cargo van go 55, through the grace of god I survived. 7 months of therapy; everyday, and then my sponsors fired me. I was bitter at skateboarding and didn't skate for 7 years, only backyard pools on my birthdays. In 1998, Don Fishur was skating a lot in Oregon at the time not knowing if the old cobwebs would come of and join him on so many skate trips. Slowly but surely I surpassed what I thought I could do on a skateboard then to help design and build our skate park in Pacifica, I never thought I would be so blessed. I have been skating contests for the past 3-5 years. My main focus has been the world cup concrete series along with different benefits and gatherings, contests that promoted the joy of skateboarding. While skating Jacks Skateboard night on August 22 after doing a corner air in the deep end, when I landed; stepped off, the friction on my back leg snapped like a flower stem, both bones in my chin broke; the main one shattered. It was one of those you couldn't go home and just put ice on it. It was hanging by skin and ligaments, my Jak's drove me with his panel truck one hour south the hospital. There I got rays and was sent home at 4am to return at 8am the next day. I went to do paperwork since I was not insured, the pain was brutal, and I had to be admitted. My older sister is a nurse, she seen me that eve; she said, "Give him the morphine, he's in pain." My shin was shattered; every movement was a sharp pain. That night before the surgery; PAIN I wish on no man. Before surgery my doctor let me know he wasn't sure if he could save it; just above my ankle. He let me know he was going to try a rod somehow. I was just happy to get knocked out and hoping it wouldn't be hanging anymore when I woke up. My last visit to the Doctor, he said he was happy to have pulled it off. The rod goes from my knee to my ankle, with a screw holding the shattered part together. They said I might be able to put my own weight on it, his assistant said I should be going off around spring; April. I have a brace now so I could shower and ice the swelling. It’s going down surely but slowly. I give thanks to my family and close friends that are here to help otherwise I really don't know what I’d do. I give thanks for all the love and support of the skate community which I never thought had love for me, THANK YOU!
